Hi everybody, and welcome to a new Top Ten Tuesday!

Today’s topic is about books I like but can’t remember much about. Which, for me, is basically over half of all books I read over 5-6 months ago. Now, usually this isn’t much of a problem. EXCEPT when I want to read a series and there is a WHOLE YEAR or more in between books. Though I remember big lines, all the finer details and elements that make up the intricacy of the characters and plot are just… gone. And because I don’t want to lessen my reading experience, that means I need to re-read. See why I prefer binge-reading series?

Anyway, here are some examples of series which I really do want to continue, but that I first need to re-read because I have goldfish brain:

The Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson

The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson

All I remember from The Final Empire is an epic group of misfits planning a heist or rebellion or something, a cool magic system featuring metals and a love interest who loves reading. And that’s pretty much it.

The Dark Artifices by Cassandra Clare

Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare lord-of-shadows-by-cassandra-clare Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare

I will scream about my love for Lady Midnight forever and will rave about the Blackthorn family to anyone who will listen. But I definitely need to re-read before I dive into Lord of Shadows. Bonus: I can do this just before the release of Queen of Air and Darkness so I don’t have to wait for the conclusion!

The To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy by Jenny Han

To All The Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han PS I Still Love You by Jenny Han Always and Forever Lara Jean by Jenny Han

I feel like I may remember sufficiently about the first two books to start Always and Forever, Lara Jean, but on the other hand I want to re-read to refresh my memory about the amazing family dynamics and all the cute fluff and baking to really have the full reading experience again.

The Nevernight Chronicles by Jay Kristoff

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff

I remember loving Nevernight, despite not liking it for the first 100 or so pages. I remember lots of stabbing and an awesome shadow cat. But is that enough to continue with Godsgrave without a re-read?

The Crown’s Game duology by Evelyn Skye

The Crown's Game by Evelyn Skye The Crown's Fate by Evelyn Skye

Another favorite read of mine, but I remember close to nothing except magic and Russia and a contest, so a re-read is definitely in order.

The Starbound trilogy by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner This Shattered World by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner Their Fractured Light by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner

These Broken Stars had my favorite trope: hate-to-love. There was also a space crash and two people ending up alone together on a different planet but more than that? I know nothing.

The Witchlands series by Susan Dennard

Truthwitch by Susan Dennard windwitch-by-susan-dennard

I actually remember not being super impressed with Truthwitch, but thinking it had so much potential and wanting to continue. It had a great female friendship, an intriguing magic system and that hate-to-love romance I adore. But I need to re-read to continue and do I really want to to spend time re-reading a book I wasn’t THAT in love with the first time?

The Remnant Chronicles by Mary E. Pearson

The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson The Heart of Betrayal by Mary E. Pearson  The Beauty of Darkness by Mary E. Pearson

I think this may be the worst memory loss of all. All I remember from The Kiss of Deception is what is written in the blurb.  But I do remember liking it so I still want to continue the series after a re-read!

The Falling Kingdom series by Morgan Rhodes

falling-kingdoms-by-morgan-rhodes Rebel Spring by Morgan Rhodes Gathering Darkness by Morgan Rhodes

Frozen Tides by Morgan Rhodes Crystal Storm by Morgan Rhodes Immortal Reign by Morgan Rhodes

Okay, I’ve read the first five books in the series and only have the last one to go. And I don’t think I want to re-read them all, but I think (I hope) I can manage with a quick re-read of Crystal Storm before starting Immortal Reign.

HAve you reAd Any of this series, And if so, are they totally worth the re-read? Do you have the same problem of forgetting all about previous books in a series?

  1. …and as usual, I still need to read even book one of the ‘Lara Jean’ trilogy. They sure look adorable though. And Evelyn’s books have made me curious each time I see them! Someday I may just pick up a copy of “The Crown’s Game” and see what it’s all about.

I read “These Broken Stars” years ago, and basically remember nothing about it. Except that I do think I enjoyed it! Here’s hoping if I continue the series I find it easy to follow, because right now re-reading the first book isn’t on my near bookworm horizon. 😀

    1. I do hope you’ll love the Lara Jean trilogy! And The Crown’s Game of course 🙂
Glad to hear I’m not the only one who doesn’t remember much frrom These Broken Stars! I don’t mind re-reading, but sometimes I just don’t want to spend time on that when there are other books also fighting for my attention 🙂

  2. I haven’t read any of these but the Truthwitch and falling Kingdoms series are both on my TBR. I guess I have no excuse for not reading Falling Kingdoms since there are so many books out now, I could binge read them. Which sounds kind of fun actually. 🙂

    Great list.

    1. Oh yes, that’s a great idea to binge read the Falling Kingdoms series now they’re all (almost) out! This is definitely a good reason to just read series all at once when they’re all released: no waiting, no forgetting 🙂

  3. Do not reread Truthwitch. I did not like the first one that much and the second one was even worse for me. If I (ever) start mistborn I’m going to have to read it all within a few months. I do not want to reread a book that large haha.

    1. Ah, I wasn’t that impressed with Truthwitch myself, so maybe I’d indeed better put Windwitch on hold. Haha I know, I don’t want to re-read the first Mistborn either but I’m not sure if I can get by with what little I do remember…

  4. Yes you can re-read Lord of Shadows before December! I can’t wait for Queen of Air and Darkness…Lord of Shadows is everything! I am also looking to finish up the To All the Boys, Starbound and the Crowns Game series this year with one book in each left. I have been on the fence about Nevernight and Mistborn. But do plan to marathon read the Remnant Chronicles in 2018.

    1. Ah I heard so many good things about Lord of Shadows, I can’t wait to read it! But I also heard the ending is a total cliffhanger so it’ll definitely be a good thing if I have the next book ready already 🙂 Hope you’ll get to all of the books you want in 2018!

  5. Wow, I haven’t read any of these series (because I’m afraid of series?) but almost all of these are on my TBR! I hate series for the same reason 🙁 I forget what I read in previous books. That’s why I prefer to read series when they are finally completed :p

I hope you get to re-read a few of them soon 😛

    1. Yes, I totally get why you’d prefer to read series when they are completed! If only I had the patience most of the time 😉

  6. Holy shit you read a lot of YA fantasy that I never got around to but would have liked to lol. I am caught up with The Dark Artifices but Truthwitch and Windwitch is just waiting-to-be-read.
Here is My Top 10 Tuesday

    1. Haha I do love YA fantasy 🙂 Hope you’ll get to Truthwitch soon!

  7. Great spin on this week’s topic. I have goldfish brain too, which is why I almost always wait to start new series when there are at least a couple of books out. If there’s too big of a wait between books, I almost always forget everything about what I’ve read. I did just finally read Nevernight though so I’m looking forward to continuing with Godsgrave.

    1. Thanks, glad to hear I’m not the only one with goldfish brain 🙂 It’s definitely a good reason to wait with starting a series until more or all books are out. Hope you’ll enjoy Godsgrave!

  8. The title of this post describes my life ? honestly this is one of the reasons why I think I struggle with reading series so much. I can’t remember much about Nevernight either except that it was hardcore and Mia was a total badass. I really want to read Godsgrave but I’m worried I’ll be like confused the whole time.

    1. Haha glad to hear goldfish brain is not just a me-thing 😀 And I feel the same way about Nevernight and Godsgrave! I want to read Godsgrave but I’m worried I won’t remember enough about Nevernight and it’ll ruin my reading experience. Maybe we should look up some recaps… or re-read 🙂

  9. Good luck with Lord of Shadows. That book broke me! :'(

    1. Thanks! Ah I’m looking forward to being broken by Lord of Shadows! Well, kind of 🙂

  10. LOL at your post title! I totally sympathize. I want to finish the Starbound trilogy, but I only remember bare bones things about the first book. I know I liked it, though!

    1. Haha thanks and glad to hear 🙂 Yes, that’s about what I remember from the first Starbound book as well!

  11. Awesome title and concept. There are some series, especially fantasy ones, which I think are best to marathon once most of them are out. There’s soooo much to remember in some of them. Thanks for sharing your list!

    1. Thanks! And yes, I totally agree that most fantasy series are better to be read all at once! It’s what I prefer actually. But I also tend to get impatient when I REALLY want to read a book so I’ll need to work on that 🙂

  12. I read both The Crown’s Game and The Crown’s Fate last year and whilst I loved The Crown’s Game, I was a little disappointed with The Crown’s Fate.

    1. Oh sorry to hear you were a bit disappointed with The Crown’s Fate! Hope I’ll like it a bit better…

  13. I haven’t read any of these, but OMG can I relate!! That huge long wait in between book releases is one major reason I’m so resistant to book series nowadays-because I already have little time to read as it is, and now I have to read the same book TWICE just to remember what happened!? No way, Jose. Buuuut, I am missing out on a lot of fabulous series 🙁 I should probably suck it up and deal with it. Or just wait until I’m old and the entire series is out and I can binge it in one go…

    1. AH yes, I totally understand! There is already so little time, and re-reading just to remember seems like a waste. But I’d definitely recommend waiting until a series is out completely and then binge-reading them, I love it 🙂

  14. I haven’t read any of these but I really want to read Lady Midnight, I don’t know if the series is over yet but I want to binge read it instead of waiting years for it to be complete. I am excited for Clare’s new series that has nothing to do with the Shadowhunters universe that’s for sure!

    1. I think it’s a great idea to binge-read the Lady Midnight series – I think the final book comes out this year somewhere 🙂 And wait, she has a new, non-shadowhunter series coming out? Must check it out now!

  15. I definitely need to finish the Lara Jean trilogy. I’ve just got one to go! I hope you enjoy these when you reread them.

    1. Thanks, hope we’ll both enjoy the final Lara Jean book this year 🙂

  16. Poinsettia says:

I love your take on this week’s topic. I have the same issue with series, and I have also taken to waiting so I can binge read an entire series. Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.

    1. Thanks! Binge-reading a series is definitely the best 🙂

  17. I haven’t read any of these series, though I’ve definitely meant to! I’m pretty sure I started These Broken Stars (after reading and loving the Illuminae books, which Kaufman cowrote) but I never finished it. I need to give the trilogy another chance!

    My TTT

    1. Ah yes, I still need to read Gemina 🙂 Hope we’ll both get to the These Broken Stars trilogy again soon 🙂

  18. Ahh I remember before I picked up Windwitch I had NO RECOLLECTION of anything that happened in Truthwitch and was so annoyed with myself (because re-reading can take a long time for me) but then Susan Dennard did a thread wrapping up all the events that happened in the first book and I felt so blessed, it was honestly a great moment ahaha ?

Here’s my TTT if you want to give it a look: https://taytalksbooks.wordpress.com/2018/01/23/top-ten-tuesdays-books-i-liked-but-cant-remember-much-about/

    1. Oh yes, I think I saw her do a recap on Twitter of Truthwitch! I’ll have to look it up perhaps 🙂

  19. Ooh, we share the Starbound Trilogy and the Falling Kingdoms series! I read These Broken Stars and started the sequel, but wasn’t in the mood for it, so I put it down…but I haven’t picked it up since. Oops. ? I binged the first three books of Falling Kingdoms, then went on to never read the others, for some reason???

I have read Lady Midnight, but I think I remember enough to continue with Lord of Shadows! And I’m finally hoping to read Nevernight this year! ?

    1. Hope we’ll both get to all the books we want this year 🙂

  20. A lot of times I just start reading the next book in the series and it tends to jog my memory… usually. 🙂 Oh man you have many up there I have yet to read or need to continue. I think you have some great choices up there even if you don’t remember everything about it! 🙂

    1. Oh yes sometimes that works really well, but when it doesn’t I get so annoyed with myself for not remembering 🙂

  21. Yes on Mistborn! Start with that one! I really, REALLY loved that series. You might need to gloss over the first one again because there is a LOT of stuff going on.

    1. Ahh yes, I should really get back to that series! Maybe I can get by with a quick recap or something, if not I’ll just re-read 🙂

  22. Well, I kind of mostly remember the stuff from the first 2 books of the Nevernight Chronicles but I wouldn’t find rereading it, though only I get time. Also, I read The Final Empire this December along with The Crown’s Game, so it’s still fresh on my mind. At least I hope so. I really hope I’ll be able to complete this series this year along with a bunch of my endless tbr…

    1. That’s good that you remember, makes it much easier to start the next ones in the series! I’m hoping that maybe I can get by with just reading a recap, if not, I’ll have to reread 🙂
