Calendar Girls – February 2019 – Black History Month: Favorite Book By A Black Author

Calendar Girls

The Calendar Girls is a monthly blog event that was created by Melanie at MNBernard Books, and Flavia at Flavia the Bibliophile, and is now hosted by Adrienne at Darque Dreamer Reads, and Katie at Never Not Reading. It was inspired by the 1961 classic song by Neil Sedaka and created to ignite fun bookish discussions among readers and bloggers.

So, just like the song, each month a new theme is chosen (participants will get to vote between two choices), and participating bloggers get to choose their favorite book within the theme, or the book they think best fits the theme, to talk about in a blog post on the first Monday of each month.

For today’s post, the theme and my selection are:

Alice had her whole summer planned. Non-stop all-you-can-eat buffets while marathoning her favorite TV shows (best friends totally included) with the smallest dash of adulting–working at the library to pay her share of the rent. The only thing missing from her perfect plan? Her girlfriend (who ended things when Alice confessed she’s asexual). Alice is done with dating–no thank you, do not pass go, stick a fork in her, done.

But then Alice meets Takumi and she can’t stop thinking about him or the rom com-grade romance feels she did not ask for (uncertainty, butterflies, and swoons, oh my!).

When her blissful summer takes an unexpected turn, and Takumi becomes her knight with a shiny library employee badge (close enough), Alice has to decide if she’s willing to risk their friendship for a love that might not be reciprocated—or understood.

Well, this months’ topic proved to me that I really need to work on reading more books by black authors. I have a few, but a lot of the hyped books are still on my TBR and have been on my TBR for way too long – I’m thinking about Angie Thomas, Nic Stone, Tomi Adeyemi, Justina Ireland, Dhonielle Clayton and more. Looking forward to all the recs this month!

That said, I do love and adore my own pick of the month and highly recommend it. Not only is it a fun contemporary by a black author, it also features a gorgeous black heroine (on the cover!) and has amazing biromantic ace rep. BIROMANTIC ACE REP! Let’s Talk About Love is definitely an underrated gem.
