MY THOUGHTS (spoiler-free):
“I’ll be forced to spend my days at her service but never at her side. In her shadow but never truly seen. In love with a girl I’d have bowed to long before she became my queen.”
This will be a short review as this is the third and final installment of The Powerless Trilogy, so I don’t want to spoil anything. But I did review books one and two, so I still wanted to get my thoughts on book three out as well.
To recap, I’ve had mixed feelings about this series so far. I thought the worldbuilding in book one was spotty and confusing, and the plot was quite trope-heavy, but it was an addictive read and the romance aspect was outstanding. Then book two put all the worldbuilding on the backburner for a bit and focused on the romance and character development, and I thought it was pure genius.
Onto book three and the mixed feelings are back. So let me just recap what I didn’t like first…
The plot was feeling a bit repetitive and I felt the same confusion I did in book one. Things happened a certain way because of reasons, and I just didn’t understand those reasons. To be fair, some of that confusion was intentional and was cleared up while reading, which was good. But I feel like some things were just put in for shock value but they didn’t make sense for the plot nor the character development. Tough to explain without spoilers, but to sum up: I felt like the plot was spotty in places and felt a bit too much like book one.
Also, what was up with that weird epilogue?
But what was once again outstanding was the romance. The pining, the banter, the tension… AMAZING! I think Lauren Roberts should focus more on writing romance, because this part of the book and the series as a whole was always on point. Especially the POV of Kai – the man really is a poet and I swooned every single time he was on page. Bonus points for the audiobook narration, which I definitely recommend.
So overall, I’m giving this a four-star rating, which is mostly because of the beyond swoonworthy romance, banter and pining. While I had mixed feelings and I’m not sure whether I’ll be re-reading the series anytime soon, it still was a satisfying conclusion and Kai and Paedyn will go down as one of my all-time favorite ships.
