My 5 Favorite Audiobook Narrators

20230425 Favorite Audiobook Narrators

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Hi everybody and welcome to a new Top Ten Tuesday! Today we’re talking about our favorite audiobook narrators. I love audiobooks, I listen to them on my daily commute and while doing household chores and that way I do manage to listen to about 2-3 audiobooks a months. And when you listen to audiobooks a lot, you do notice certain narrators are quite popular and narrate a lot of your favorite books. So I chose to focus today on the 5 audiobook narrators that I love AND have listened to the most books by.

This is another short and sweet post, so let’s go!

Brittany Presley

Brittany has narrated a lot of my favorite romances and contemporaries!

Lauren Fortgang

I mostly know Lauren from her work narrating Leigh Bardugo’s books.

Callie Dalton

Callie does a lot (or all of?) Mariana Zapata’s audiobook narration and I love it.

Julia Whelan

Though Julia Whelan’s own books are still on my TBR, I am already loving her as a narrator!

Tavia Gilbert

Tavia has narrated Jeaniene Frost’s books and I’ve loved every single one.

  1. Julia Whelan is on my list, too. Good narrators can really make a book.

    1. So true!

  2. I kind of wish I could get into audio books more. I did listen to a few here and there over the years, and while I enjoyed most, I just haven’t picked it up as a normal habit. Guess it must be I have too much love for the actual book still. 😉

    1. I’ve learned to enjoy both audio and physical books, but it does indeed remain an entirely different reading experience!

  3. Brittany Pressley and Julia Whelan are both on mine as well. If you haven’t listened to ‘To Be Taught, If Fortunate’ by Becky Chambers, Brittany Pressley is sensational (and the book is gorgeous too).

    1. Oh, I didn’t realise Brittany Pressley did a Becky Chambers book! I’ll have to try that one.

  4. Out of these I’ve only listened to Tavia Gilbert with A Grave Girls’ Getaway but her as narrator isn’t one for me I think. I disliked the voice she did for Bones so I’ll just keep on reading it as physical or ebook 😞

    1. Oh I totally get that, her Bones voice is definitely out of the box! But I’ve listened to all of her books on audio, so I’ve kind of gotten used to it – in fact, now it’s weird for me to hear another narrator do the books from Bones’ POV 😀

  5. Brittany Presley was on my list before I had to narrow it down to ten. And I love Callie Dalton narrating Zapata’s books!

    1. Callie Dalton does do a great job for Mariana Zapata!

  6. I haven’t listened to any of these narrators, but the books look great. Here’s my list: https://bonniereadsandwrites.com/2023/04/25/top-ten-tuesday-favorite-audiobook-narrators-princeharry-zararamm-jamesearljones/

    1. Thanks! Hope you’ll enjoy them if you try them!

    1. Hope you’ll enjoy them!

  7. I haven’t listened to audiobooks in awhile, probably the only narrator I could name is Julia Whelan! But I do enjoy full-cast recordings.

    1. Full-cast recordings are the best! It makes the story come so much more alive 🙂

We match on three narrators! Great list!

    1. Thanks!

  9. I love Dalton and Whelan! I’ve probably heard the other ones, too. Great list!

    1. They’re some amazing narrators indeed!

  10. Nice list! I have quite a few of these books on my TBR, might have to search some of them out in audio now.

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!

    1. Hope you’ll love all of these books, on audio or not 😀

  11. I don’t listen to audio very much but I’ve heard there are some narrators who just do an amazing job bringing their books t olife!

    1. There really are some amazing narrators out there, it’s so cool what they can do!

  12. Ooh, I totally didn’t realise that Whelan narrates Addie! I had her on my list today as a narrator I can’t wait to try but I also have the audiobook in my Library and I didn’t see it 😂 Great list!

    1. Haha it was surprising to me too and I did listen to the audiobook already 😀 But when I checked my audiobook library I saw her for Addie and I hadn’t even realised… Hope you’ll enjoy Addie!

  13. Sophie @BewareOfTheReader says:

Lauren Fortgant, Julia Wheland and Brittany Pressley are also on my list!

    1. They’re all amazing!

  14. Julia Whelan is popular today. She’s on my list as well.

    Happy TTT!

    1. Julia Whelan is great indeed!

  15. If Lauren Fortgang does Leigh Bardugo then I am assuming she did Six of Crows and yes, she is amazing.

    1. She really is!

  16. Audiobooks have actually overtaken physical books as my main form of reading in the last couple of years as I listen to them on my way to work, whenever I’m on public transport anywhere and when I go running and just in general walking around, so yeah, a lot! I’ve listened to a surprising range of narrators across the almost 60 titles I’ve listened to since I got audible in 2019 but a few of my favourites, who I’ve listened to multiple books by:
    1) Saskia Maarleveld, I’ve listened to six books narrated by her at this point and almost all of them have made it into my favourite books of the year list in 2021 and 2022 since I started listening to her (that’s not to say she’s the only good thing about them but her narration certainly enhanced my reading experience). Her skill with accents is just *chefs kiss*. She seems to do a lot of historical which is great for me, and she’s the narrator of choice for two of my favourite historical fiction authors from the past couple of years, Kate Quinn and Madeline Martin so I know I’ll be listening to a lot more of her in the future.
    2) January LaVoy, she narrated the Diviners series, I listened to all four on audiobook and she MADE that series for me. I mean I love the story and the characters yes, but her narration captured the setting and the atmosphere so well that I genuinely feel like if I’d read the physical copies that there would have been something missing.
    3) Nicola Barber, she narrated the Stalking Jack The Ripper series and I listened to books 2, 3 & 4. Honestly she’s kind of a mix of the first two, she’s great with accents like Saskia Maarleveld but also conveys the atmosphere of a book so well like January LaVoy. Her narration of Thomas also made me like him more as a character than I did when I read Stalking Jack The Ripper in physical copy.
I’ve heard Lauren Fortgang is really good but I’ve only ever read Leigh Bardugo’s books in physical copy.
Sorry this was a really long comment, I have lots of thoughts on audiobook narrators!

    1. Audiobooks have taken over a lot of my reading too! I don’t know your 3 recs yet, but all the more reason to get to know them! 🙂

      1. I hope you end up loving them as much as I do!

  17. To my knowledge I haven’t listened to any books by these narrators yet…thanks for the recommendations, will add them to my list!

    1. Thanks, hope you’ll enjoy them when you listen to them!

  18. I’m terrible at keeping tracking of narrators, but I do love Julia Whelan and Lauren Fortgang.

    1. Me too, but I do love those a lot 🙂

  19. I listen to audiobooks all the time. Julia Whelan and Karen Cass are some of my favorite narrators.

    1. Audiobooks are the best indeed 🙂
