The 2023 Book-to-Screen Adaptations I’m Looking Forward To

20230131 Book-to-screen adaptations

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Hi everybody, and welcome to a new Top Ten Tuesday! Today’s topic was a freebie and I decided to focus on some of 2023’s book-to-movie or book-to-tv adaptations I’m looking forward to.

I haven’t read the book for all of these yet, but I’ll try to do so for as many as possible before watching. And of course, there are some new seasons of existing and beloved adaptations to look forward to as well. Not all release dates are confirmed, but I’m hoping we’ll see all of these in 2023. Let’s go!

Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches

Release date: 8 January 2023

Premise: Follows a neurosurgeon who discovers she is the unlikely heir to a family of witches. She must contend with a sinister presence that has haunted her family for generations. (IMDB)

Why I’m excited: A witch series featuring Alexandra Daddario, of course I’m excited!

A Man Called Otto

Release date: 13 January 2023

Premise: Otto is a grump who’s given up on life following the loss of his wife and wants to end it all. When a young family moves in nearby, he meets his match in quick-witted Marisol, leading to a friendship that will turn his world around. (IMDB)

Why I’m excited: The original novel by Fredrick Backman has been on my TBR for a while, and with the English movie adaptation out now I’m thinking I should speed up my reading of it, because this looks like just the emotional, heartwarming and funny read/watch I think I would love!

Lockwood & Co.

Release date: 27 January 2023 (Netflix)

Premise: Based on Jonathan Stroud’s young adult fantasy book series of the same name (five books, starting with The Screaming Staircase), Lockwood & Co. is set in London and follows a trio of ghost-hunting teens in their nightly escapades hunting the deadly spirits plaguing the city.

Why I’m excited: This just seems like a really fun series.

Daisy Jones and the Six

Release date: 3 March 2023 (Prime)

Premise: Following the rise of Daisy Jones and The Six’ rock band through the ’70s LA music scene on their quest for worldwide icon status. (IMDB)

Why I’m excited: This book was a masterpiece and I’m so excited to see it play out on screen. And oh, I’m sure this soundtrack will be on repeat for a long, long time.

Shadow and Bone (Season 2)

Release date: 16 March 2023 (Netflix)

Premise: We will return to the Grishaverse with Alina, Mal and the Crows and we’ll finally meet Nikolai, Tamar, Tolya and Wylan.

Why I’m excited: NIKOLAI IS HERE! AND THE WYLAN-JESPER AWESOMENESS CAN ALSO BEGIN!

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes

Release date: 17 November 2023

Premise: Coriolanus Snow mentors and develops feelings for the female District 12 tribute during the 10th Hunger Games. (IMDB)

Why I’m excited: I didn’t exactly love the book, but I’m still excited to see it brought to life.

Bridgerton (Season 3)

Release date: TBC

Premise: The third season will focus yet again on a different Bridgerton sibling, and this time it’s Colin’s turn for the spotlight.

Why I’m excited: Colin and Penelope’s story is finally coming!

Red White and Royal Blue

Release date: TBC (Prime)

Premise: Based on the Casey McQuiston Novel of the same name, this LGBTQ story focuses on Alex Claremont-Diaz, the First Son of the United States and his rivalry with the young Prince of Wales, Henry. After causing a major uproar at the older Prince’s Brother’s wedding, the two are forced to avoid a National incident by up-playing their non existent friendship with a goodwill visit to the UK. Their rivalry soon turns into a forced friendship and then blossoms into something even more. (IMDB)

Why I’m excited: It’s one of my favorite stories ever and I’m really liking the casting so far so I have high hopes.

The Last Thing He Told Me

Release date: TBC (Apple TV)

Premise: A woman forms an unexpected relationship with her 16-year-old stepdaughter while searching for the truth about why her husband has mysteriously disappeared. (IMDB)

Why I’m excited: This is based on one of the most hyped thrillers/mysteries of 2021, starring Jennifer Garner and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and produced by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine.

Heartstopper (Season 2)

Release date: TBC (Netflix)

Premise: The second season of my favorite wholesome 2022 adaptation is on the way!

Why I’m excited: I want to see the Paris trip come to life, with more Nick and Charlie AND not to forget more Tao and Elle!

  7. I’m so excited about almost all of these too! Also, Lessons in Chemistry! I believe that is this year too. I saw, A Man Called Otto, this past weekend and enjoyed it!

    1. Oh Lessons in Chemistry is a good one too! I also still need to read the book so hopefully I can do that before the adaptation releases. And I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed A Man Called Otto!

  9. Super excited about Daisy Jones and it’s almost here! Yay! I didn’t realize A Man Called Ove was being made into a movie. That book has been on my TBR forever. Guess I should hurry up and read it. I also can’t wait for Bridgerton season #3. Let’s hope they’re all good!

    1. I’m so excited for Daisy Jones too! Did you know the Aurora album is actually being released too, like a real album? The first song, Regret Me, is already on Spotify – I just found out today and was so happy 🙂 I want to read A Man Called Ove too, it’s been receiving so many rave reviews. And ahh Bridgerton, I hope we’ll get a release date soon 🙂

      1. I did! I need to listen to the first song.

  10. I’m so excited for Season 2 of Shadow and Bone. I had also completely forgotten that The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was coming out this year, but I’m looking forward to that one too. 1. I feel like I’ve been waiting for season 2 of Shadow and Bone forever haha, I’m so excited for it. A Man Called Otto does look like such a lovely film, I hope to watch it soon (and read the book since I haven’t doe that yet either)

  11. Still need to watch Season 1 of Shadow and Bone. I know. Haha, just haven’t gotten to it. Always a bit worried/hesitant about book > series/movies stuff. I have been trying out Lockwood and so far it is pretty decent and fun~

    1. Haha I totally understand, but that’s a good thing because this way you now have 2 seasons to binge instead of just one 🙂 Glad to hear you’re enjoying Lockwood so far!

  12. I really love this topic – I started watching The Mayfair Witches already, since that’s one of my favorite book series of all time. It’s so different from the books, but still intriguing as long as I can separate them. And I’m definitely psyched for Shadow and Bone, Red White and Royal Blue, and Bridgerton, and curious about Daisy Jones and the Six. Fingers crossed that they are good!

    1. Oh, glad to hear you’re enjoying The Mayfair Witches! And hope we’ll enjoy all these other shows as well, I’m definitely excited about them all.

  13. This is a great topic. One of the books I recently read was going to be a movie and now I don’t remember which one it was, sigh.

    1. Haha, I totally understand, it will probably come back to you when you’re not even thinking about it 🙂

  14. […] got my idea from Lindsey from @lindseyreads ! She chose to talk about the book to movie adaptation coming in 2023 and that inspired me to list […]

  15. masterspj says:

I’m interested in watching A Man Called Otto. Tom Hanks has some big shoes to fill, as I watched and enjoyed the original Swedish adaptation of the movie a couple of years ago.

    1. Oh I am curious about the Swedish adaptation as well!

  16. I didn’t know any of these were coming to screen except the Hanks one. Sheesh I must live under a rock. Thanks for the visit & have a terrific week.

    1. I was surprised by a lot of these as well, so you’re not alone haha 🙂

  17. OMG, I’m so excited for Daisy Jones & the Six, especially after the trailer dropped and we got to actually hear their music!

    1. Me too, I already have had their first released song on repeat on my playlist – I’m so glad we’ll actually get the full Aurora album 🙂

  18. Molly's Book Nook says:

My husband and I were about to start Lockwood & Co last night. Opted to finish Servant first, but we’ll probably check it out soon! I just finished reading Daisy Jones and the Six. I didn’t love it, but I’ll watch the show. And I really need to catch up with Shadow & Bone season 1 lol I can’t believe I still haven’t finished it

    1. I want to start Lockwood soon too, it looks like fun 🙂 Hope you’ll enjoy the TV show for Daisy Jones more than the book though! And that’s totally okay, catching up with season 1 of Shadow and Bone before watching season 2 means more to binge 🙂

  19. So much stuff to be excited about! I’m looking forward to Heartstopper, Shadow & Bone, and the Hunger Games.

    1. It’s looking to be an exciting year when it comes to adaptations! Hope they’ll all live up to our expectations.

  20. I’m looking forward to 1: Daisy Jones and The Last Thing He Told Me 🙂

    1. They both do sound so good!

  21. I totally forgot Daisy Jones was out this year! And so soon too—I thought it’d be closer to the end of the year since I just saw the trailer. I’m also super excited for more Heartstopper! 😍 I hope you enjoy all the adaptations you watch, Lindsey.

    1. Yes, Daisy Jones is indeed already releasing so soon, I’m so excited 🙂 And definitely also for more Heartstopper, that show is just so much feel-good adorableness <3
