My (Quite Vague and Very Chill) Bookish Goals for 2023

My Bookish Goals for 2023

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Hi everybody, and welcome to a new Top Ten Tuesday! Today we’re talking about our bookish goals for 2023. I love setting goals, but I’m also a major mood reader who hates stressing out over said goals so I usually keep my goals very laid-back and vague. This year I got a teensy bit more specific and gave myself 5 actual goals. But to balance it out, I also gave myself a main goal/bonus goal that outruled them all. Basically, I gave myself permission to not reach my goals. Because that’s how I roll, and will keep rolling in 2023! Here we go:

MAIN GOAL / BONUS GOAL /
THE GOAL TO RULE ALL GOALS:

All the below goals are more like guidelines – fun is what matters most! Reading what I want, when I want to. Reading (and blogging) is my hobby and that’s why it should stay fun above all else. I’d love to reach all of these goals, but the minute I feel a slump coming on because I’m focusing too much on these goals, I will give myself permission to take it easy 🙂

Read 50 books

As ever year, the obligatory Goodreads Challenge. I never quite like this one, because it should be about fun and quality instead of only quantity, but I also can’t NOT do this challenge for some reason. The stats-nerd in me loves quantifying my reading, even if it also stresses me out. So my compromise to myself is to keep it reasonable: 50 books per year. For me, that’s doable and I usually surpass it. So I’m keeping it as is 🙂

Re-read more often

I LOVE re-reading books. It’s always a little magical to rediscover and known, beloved world and revisit favorite characters. But I don’t do it that often because I can get distracted by shiny new releases and, to be honest, the pressure that sometimes comes with being a book blogger to review those new releases. But, as every year, I want to make it a goal for myself to re-read on a somewhat regular basis.

Finish/continue some series I started

I’ve become so terrible at finishing series. For me, the issue is mostly that I forgot what happened in the books I’ve read before, so I want to re-read those before diving into new installments. As you can imagine, that doesn’t happen very often. But I do hope to finish some series this year.

Read more new-to-me-authors

There are a few authors out there that have been on my TBR for ages. Blogger friends love them, and I keep saying I want to read them and then procrastinate. No more! Here are a few new-to-me authors I want to commit to (finally) reading this year:

Do the 12 Book Challenge

I don’t usually do challenges (because I’m a mood reader and challenges stress me out), but I still wanted a way to step out of my reading comfort zone by reading some genres I normally wouldn’t, or to try some books recommended by friends that I might not pick up otherwise. So the 12 Book Challenge seems like a great one to try! I asked, you recommended (thank you!), and here are my 12 picks:

  1. I love that you want to reread more often. I usually like to relisten instead of rereading. It makes the book feel new. I am also excited for you to try those 4 authors!

    1. Oh, that is a good idea indeed! It’s like discovering the book all over again in a new way.

      1. Yes, it is!

  2. I have The Maid on my shelf, but haven’t read it. I did see someone say on Instagram that it was a really good read though which is why I bought it. 🙂 Hope you meet all of your reading (and life) goals for 2023, Lindsey. 🙂 Happy reading.

    1. Thanks Rissi! Hope you’ll also love The Maid when you read it!

  3. I’m starting to sweat seeing Airman on your recommendations graphic. 😂

    1. Haha recommendations can be scary – but I’m sure I’ll love it!

  4. Oh yes please continue reading The Others <3

    1. I definitely will, I already loved book 1 and 2!

My own post will probably look a lot like yours Lindsey. I guess we are both chill people 🤣🤣

    1. Haha I don’t know if I could be considered chill, but I definitely try to be 🤣

    1. Thanks!

  8. I also had completing my Goodreads Challenge, finishing off some of my unfinished series and reading more new to me authors as some of my goals this year. In terms of my Goodreads Challenge, the way I took the pressure out of it was looking it as just a way to track my reading rather than an actual challenge: I give myself permission to lower it/raise it depending on how much I’m reading so I always meet it and it’s really just a way of tracking what I’ve read in a given year rather than a “challenge” as such.

    1. That’s a good way to look at your Goodreads challenge! Definitely takes the pressure off that way.

      1. Yes, absolutely. I always want reading to be fun and never a chore!

  9. Yay, I hope you love The Wedding Ringer! I think keeping goals pretty chill is the way to go – it’s reading, it’s supposed to be fun!

    1. Thanks for the rec! And indeed, reading should be fun.

  10. These are some great goals! I totally agree with you about keeping it fun and of course, low pressure! I hope you enjoy all of these books and achieving all of your goals, Lindsey!

    1. Thanks, Dini! Keeping it fun is always my number one goal haha 🙂

  11. YES to #1. I think a lot of us forget that our hobbies are supposed to be fun. Good luck with all of these!

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.

    1. Indeed, if it’s no longer fun we need to change something about it. Thanks!

  12. Reading what I want, when I want is practically my mantra. 🙂 It’s why I don’t set bookish goals and don’t participate in reading challenges. The second it starts to feel like works, or that I’m reading to fulfill some arbitrary challenge… it loses the enjoyment factor for me.

    1. Yes, exactly! The challenges often sound like fun, but I know I need to keep it enjoyable and putting pressure on myself is not a good idea. So I’ve learned to just go with my reading moods 🙂

  13. I love your goals. I also can’t not do the Goodreads challenge, LOL!

    1. Haha, glad to hear I’m not the only one!

The Twelve Books challenge looks really neat. https://nicolesnook.com/top-ten-tuesday-1-17-23/

    1. It is a really fun challenge indeed 🙂

  15. I’ve seen rereading as a goal multiple times – I’m not a rereader at all, so that one didn’t make my list. 🙂 Trying to vary authors and genres and try new things is definitely a priority for me as well. Here’s to a year of happy reading!

    1. Trying to vary authors and genres and trying new things is definitely a great goal!

  16. I am not a huge re-reader and admire people that want to re-read. When re-reading I get very anxious about all the unread books. But I might have to do a couple of re-reads this year as I want to finish a few series and I don’t remember much about them. Good luck with your goals :).

    1. I totally understand, I get the unread-book-anxiety as well 🙂 But I do enjoy re-reading, especially when I can re-read a beloved series in preparation of a sequel.

  17. I can’t not set the Goodreads goal either, but I do set it at a number I know I’ll surpass (and I know I can always downgrade it is I have major life changes).

    1. Yes, exactly! That’s my Goodreads strategy as well 🙂

  18. I love your goals, especially the overarching goal, which is definitely the most important part, and I think we sometimes lose sight of that. I’ve gotten better with rereading, especially whenever I get ready to read the next book in a series, and I always find myself picking up something new.

    1. Thanks! The overarching goal is definitely the most important one, but also the one I need to remind myself of the most. I also love re-reading in preparation of reading the next book in a series!

      1. I always pick up on something new when I reread a book!

  19. They are great goals. I’ve seen the 12 challenge around – it seems quite popular!
    Have a great week!

    1. The 12 Book Challenge is indeed a popular one – it seems fun though so I’m happy to give it a try 🙂

      1. Definitely!

  20. Good luck with all of these! I’m hoping to finish up some series and re-read a few books as well this year.

    1. Thanks!

  21. […] been recommended by a ton of fellow bloggers. It’s also one of the recommendations on my 2023 12 Book Challenge and though I’m only at the beginning I can definitely already see why so many people love […]
