Something Different Sunday

My 10 Favorite TV Shows Watched In 2022

My 10 Favorite TV Shows Watched In 2022

Hi everybody, and welcome to a new Something Different Sunday, in which I talk about, well, something DIFFERENT than books.

I know we’re already in 2023 so it’s time to look forward, but I still wanted to take a look back at 2022 for something in particular and that’s TV shows! I love binge-watching TV and even if I don’t watch as much as I used to, I think I still managed to watch quite a few shows throughout the year. So just like I do a yearly top ten songs and top ten k-pop songs, I thought it would be fun to do a top ten TV shows!

A little important side note: these are all shows I WATCHED in 2022, not necessarily released in 2022.

I watched 20 different TV shows in 2022. The ones that just didn’t make the cut for this top ten were The Red Sleeve, The Book of Boba Fett, While You Were Sleeping (a re-watch), One Of Us Is Lying, First Kill, Emily in Paris, The Umbrella Academy, Never Have I Ever and Good Omens.

Now let’s get into the final top 10:

10. The Lord of the Rings – Rings of Power (Season 1)

rings of power

I LOVED this show so much (though I do have a few questions about the ending). I know it received a lot of criticism online, but I honestly do not understand the hate. Now, I have not read The Silmarillion, so I can’t compare to the original source material and I heard the show strays from that quite a bit. But I have read The Lord of the Rings and I have watched those movies hundreds of times. And I felt that this show gave me the same feelings as I did when watching/reading those, so for me that’s a win.

9. Business Proposal (Season 1)

Business Proposal

I hardly watched any kdramas in 2022 but I just had to highlight Business Proposal! This kdrama dominated the Netflix charts early 2022 and for good reason. I definitely recommend this show if you’re looking for a fun, light-hearted rom-com to escape into for a little bit. If you love tropes (especially fake dating), and a fun balance between hilariously derpy scenes and a swoony romance, this is definitely worth the watch. It’s available on Netflix and only 12 episodes, so it’s great for binge-watching! (Check out my full review here)

8. Bridgerton (Season 2)

Bridgerton

March 2022 was completely taken over by Bridgerton and I have no regrets. I adored the second season of this show as much as the first, though I must admit that I kind of preferred the second book over the second season. Mostly because I preferred the sisterly dynamic between Kate and Edwina in the book, and I felt like the show did the character of Edwina dirty in general. But I did love the Kate and Anthony chemistry, the Pall Mall scene and everything with Eloise and Penelope.

7. Only Murders in the Building (Season 1+2)

Only Murders in the Building

I binged both the first and second season of Only Murders in the Building this year and I loved it all! It’s a true crime comedy that also doesn’t take itself too seriously, but I’m highly enjoying. I love our main trio so much, they are hilarious and yet also have so much depth. And I’m already excited for the shenanigans they will undoubtedly get themselves into in season 3.

6. The Sandman (Season 1)

Wow, how amazing was this show? I admit it took me a few episodes to get into it, but once I did I was hooked. Every episode was a little cinematic masterpiece and the casting was just so well done. I already can’t wait for a second season.

5. Half Bad: The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself (Season 1)

Half Bad: The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself

DID ANYONE KNOW ABOUT THIS ADAPTATION OF THE HALF BAD TRILOGY BY SALLY GREEN? Because I only discovered that this show existed in November. I went into it with little to no expectations and was completely BLOWN AWAY. This show is such a hidden gem in the fantasy genre and an incredibly fresh, timely and unique take on the original source material. It’s a rollercoaster adventure with thoughtful insights and depth, great acting, amazing character journeys, an exquisite chemistry between the three main leads and a delightful queer romance. I am so very bummed it didn’t get renewed for a second season. (Read my full rave here)

4. Wednesday (Season 1)

Wednesday

I’ve been looking forward to this show for MONTHS. So naturally, I finished it in one weekend. I LOVED this show so much. This dark humor is just so amazing, and I can’t get enough. I loved Jenna Ortega as Wednesday and thought she really did the character justice. Highlights of the show to me were Wednesday’s friendships with Enid and Eugene for sure. I also loved Christina Ricci and Gwendoline Christie in their roles. And of course, Thing!

3. Stranger Things (Season 4)

STranger Things

Wow, this season of Stranger Things has taken over my life for quite a few weeks of 2022. And to be honest, I’m still not quite over it. I was a little worried the show would lose its luster after 4 seasons, but this season was one of their best ones. I was on edge the entire time. It was scary and creepy, but also funny and endearing and I love all of these characters so much. Vecna was an amazing villain and perfectly casted. Steve and Dustin and Robin and Will and Max own my heart. I will never listen to Running Up That Hill the same way again. Also, forever #TeamEddie.

2. Young Royals (Season 1+2)

Young Royals

Young Royals is a six-episode Swedish show on Netflix that’s about the Swedish prince getting into some trouble and being shipped off to a boarding school. There, he becomes friends with a working-class choir boy and their friendship quickly turns romantic. Isn’t that premise already amazing? Only downside is that there are only 6 episodes per season. But thankfully, season 3 has already been confirmed. It’ll be the final season, but I’m confident they’ll be able to wrap the story up in a satisfying way.

1. Heartstopper

Heartstopper-Netflix-1

I’m sure this is a shock to absolutely nobody as I’ve been raving about this show all year 🙂

THIS ADAPTATION WAS EVERYTHING I’VE BEEN HOPING FOR! I loved every single minute. The wholesome vibe, the heartwarming friendships and the amazing representation and diversity… this was just a perfect show from start to finish. It was a super accurate representation that also added some awesomeness and honestly, I could rave about this feel-good queer love story all day long. So instead, I wrote a full review, go check that out if you would like more of me raving!
