Favorite Words: The Adjectives I Use Way Too Much In My Reviews

20221018 Favorite Words

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Hi everybody, and welcome to a new Top Ten Tuesday! Today’s topic is “Favorite Words” and I decided to focus on my favorite words when writing reviews – so meaning, the words (mostly adjectives) I use WAAAAY too much in my reviews. I tend to use these words in pretty much every review I write. So today, I’m calling myself out and highlighting which words I use this much in reviews, and I try to find some synonyms I can use in the future (though knowing me, I’ll probably still use these words a lot, sorry!)

A little sidenote: I am happy to see that I mostly use positive words 🙂 This would be way less fun if my most-used adjectives were awful or horrible…

Unique

Some synonyms I could use instead: exceptional, extraordinary, singular, special, unparalleled, inimitable, incomparable, unmatched

Intriguing

Some synonyms I could use instead: absorbing, alluring, appealing, captivating, compelling, enthralling, exciting, fascinating, gripping, riveting

Swoon-worthy

Some synonyms I could use instead: this is a tough one – maybe dreamy or sexy?

Amazing / Awesome

Some synonyms I could use instead: fascinating, incredible, marvelous, wonderful

Slow Burn

Some synonyms I could use instead: Another tough one – maybe I could replace slow with gradual?

Adorable / Cute

Some synonyms I could use instead: charming, delightful, darling

Enjoyable

Some synonyms I could use instead: amusing, entertaining, satisfying

Do you also have words you use in almost every review?
Any other synonym suggestions for me?

  1. It’s so hard to find a synonym for swoon-worthy! I know because I find myself using it often to describe romances. But it’s the perfect word!

    1. It really is, there’s no other word quite like it!

  2. Swoon-worthy is the perfect word haha.

Sometimes it is very confronting reading your own reviews and seeing what you say so many times haha.

    1. Haha, this was definitely a very confronting exercise 😀 But swoon-worthy is indeed just such a great word, I can’t NOT use it…

  3. Sophie @BewareOfTheReader says:

Oooh I lovd the spin on today’s topic Lindsey!!

    1. Thanks Sophie!

  4. I use a lot of these in my reviews as well 😂 I think I probably use swoon-worthy the most out of all of these. Great twist!

    1. Swoon-worthy is just such a good word, especially when you’re reviewing a romance 😀

  5. I like that twist and finding other words to use instead.

    Have a good week!

  6. My two most overused adjectives in my reviews have to be…
    delightful…
    and
    lovely.

I will share mine with you if you will share yours with me.

    1. Oh, those are two very powerful adjectives though!

  7. I find I say “really” a lot in my reviews – also “intriguing” and “interesting.” Charming is such a cute word and I try to use it whenever possible!

    1. Really is indeed such a good one too! Definitely use that one a lot too. And charming is another good one!

  8. Such a good spin on today’s topic! Honestly, I don’t know what words I use a lot in my reviews: probably pacing is my most frequently used word as I’m always talking about books with bad pacing it seems!

    1. Pacing is definitely one of my most used words as well 🙂

      1. It’s just so important to whether or not I like the book!

  9. Cute is such a fun word.

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.

  11. I love this topic even though I feel called out now too haha

    1. Haha, me too! When I’m writing my next review, I’ll probably end up overthinking it all, only to end up using the same words anyway 😀

  12. I could second all of these for myself. I use awesome way too much. I also use definitely and really more than I should.

    1. Oh, definitely is another good one! I definitely (-_-) use that one a lot too! 😀

  13. I use some words way too much as well. It’s one of those “comfort” things I think. Words like Intriguing or Cute or Enjoyable would probably make my list. Thanks so much for visiting my website this week, Lindsey. Appreciate this. 🙂

    1. It’s indeed a comfort thing, these words just mean so much sometimes and it’s easy to use them 🙂

  14. Great twist on the topic! I find that I overuse certain words so I can totally relate! Intriguing is a great word, isn’t it? Totally makes it easy to overuse!!!!

    1. Intriguing means so much, it’s just so easy to use!

  15. I love your twist on this topic. I don’t even know what words I use the most in my reviews. I’m curious now, though.

“Swoon-worthy” and “slow burn” are hard to replace. They describe what you want to say about a romance perfectly. I think both of these should just be forgiven for being used a lot. 😀

    Thanks for stopping by!

    1. You’re so right about Swoon-Worthy and Slow Burn! They are made for reviewing romances so we should use them a lot haha 🙂

  16. What a neat way to go with this topic. I sometimes feel like I am searching for new ways to describe books as well.

  18. This is a great topic!! I use “really, definitely, and There are” so many times. I have to always go in and edit. haha

    1. Oooh, definitely is one I use A LOT too 😉

  19. Love your twist on last week’s topic and I’m guilty of the same, haha.

    1. Haha glad to hear I’m not the only one 😀

  20. I had to smile when I saw your topic. Yes, we all do that, and I think I am guilty of a few that I share with you. However, English is not our mother tongue, so I guess we can be forgiven.

Thanks for visiting my TTT this week this week is a Top Thirteen of songs that can be played at Halloween. And thank you so, so much for that idea. I absolutely loved it.

    1. So true, sometimes we forget English is not our mother language 🙂
