Top Ten Tuesday

Favorite Fictional Creatures of the Night (Part 2)

20221025 Halloween

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Hi everyone, and welcome to a new Top Ten Tuesday post! Today’s post is a Halloween freebie, which is my favorite kind of freebie as I LOVE all things Halloween. For today’s post, I wanted to revamp an old post I did back in 2017 (inspired by the Creatures of the Night book tag by Katytastic) on my favorite fictional creatures of the night. It’s been a while since 2017, so surely I can update this one by now. Here we go!

Vampire

The Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost

Bones and Mencheres and Spade and Vlad and Ian…
I only recently discovered this older series and I am in love with the vampire lore in it!

“Ask me if I sparkle and I’ll kill you where you stand.”

Werewolf

The Green Creek series by TJ Klune

The pack
I’ll never love another werewolf pack as much as I love this one.

“I googled “what to do when your future werewolf mate / boyfriend / best friend courts you and brings you a dead rabbit.”
First, there was a lot of porn. Then I found a recipe for Maltese rabbit stew. It was delicious. The stew, not the porn. The porn was weird.”

Zombie

The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen

The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen

The creatures in this story are called drudges, but they have a lot in common with zombies, so that counts, right?

“I’m an undertaker, or, at least, I have been for the past few months. I salt bodies and wrap them in sailcloth and sing the incantations over them. I build boats for the dead and send them where they need to go. I love what I do, helping souls find rest in the House of the Unknown God, and comforting the living in the process.”

Ghost

Under The Whispering Door by TJ Klune

Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune

Wallace
The award for the ghost with the most emotional journey and character development goes to Wallace for sure!

“It’s never enough, is it? Time. We always think we have so much of it, but when it really counts, we don’t have enough at all.”

Witch/Warlock

Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson

Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson

Nathaniel Thorn
Sassy sorcerers for the win!

“Why are you looking at me like that?” he inquired.
“You used a demonic incantation to pack my stockings!”
He raised an eyebrow. “You’re right, that doesn’t sound like something a proper evil sorcerer would do. Next time, I won’t fold them.”

Fairy/Fae

The Plated Prisoner series by Raven Kennedy

Commander Rip
I still need to read the latest book, but Rip has my heart.

“You’re not the villain in my story.”
“I am,” he says without remorse, his sharp jaw tight with tension. “But I’ll be the villain for you. Not to you.”

divider black

Demon

The Guild Codex: Demonized series by Annette Marie

Zylas
Because OF COURSE <3

“Most people couldn’t have ignored a demon sharing the library with them, but most people didn’t love books as much as I did.”

divider black

Angel

The Heart Hassle series by Raven Kennedy

The angels and cupids
Ehh, this may be bit of a stretch, but there are angels in this series. And cupids, which are way more fun.

“Ugh. I’m just not made for jail. I’m pink, for crying out loud”

divider black

Aliens

The Aurora Cycle by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Finian, mostly
Because of course I love the sassy alien the most…

“It’s the very great fortune of everything else in the Galaxy that Ultrasaurs are now almost extinct, but in the unlikely event of an encounter, traditional wisdom dictates dying quickly as the best course of action.”

Superpowered human

vicious-by-v-e-schwab

Vicious by V.E. Schwab

Victor and the others
Come on, this is a classic when it comes to stories about superpowered humans.

“Plenty of humans were monstrous, and plenty of monsters knew how to play at being human.”

What are some of your favorite creatures of the night?

  2. Werewolfs with Mercedes Thompson and the Green Creek series have been some big favorites in recent years.

    1. The Green Creek series definitely owns my heart this year. I still need to read the Mercedes Thompson books, but they’re on top of my list!

  3. Ghosts and perhaps the superpower humans for me – not the rest!!

I still want to read Under the Whispering Door.

    Have a fun Halloween!

    1. They’re definitely two of my favorite creatures as well!

  6. Cool list! I need to read more “creature” books. The monsters in my books usually turn out to be human.

      1. You’re welcome!

  9. I love ghost stories.

Zombies are cool, too, but they really scare me. So I have to watch zombie stuff with a few fingers covering my eyes and in broad daylight. LOL.

    1. I’m a big scaredy cat so I definitely don’t want too dark either haha 🙂

  12. Zombies and aliens don’t do much for me but big yes to vampires and werewolves!

    1. I definitely read WAAY less stories with zombies and aliens in them too! Vampires and werewolves, on the other hand… I’ll never get enough 🙂

  13. A great list! I might have to do this tag for next year!

    Have a great week!

A great list! I don’t think I’ve read many books that could help me with this tag. But off the top of my head, I know I’ve read books with angels, ghosts, vampires, and the grim reaper.
