10 Fantasy Books Featuring Magical Schools

10 Fantasy Books Featuring Magical Schools

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Hi everyone, and welcome to a new Top Ten Tuesday post! Today’s topic is a school-related freebie and I chose to focus on a favorite setting of mine: magical schools! (Note: for this topic, I’ve also included assassin schools). Below are 10 fantasy books that take place in magical schools. Some I’ve read already, others are still on my TBR, but they all feature the most magical education!

Carry On (Simon Snow #1) by Rainbow Rowell | Red Sister (Book of the Ancestor #1) by Mark Lawrence | Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy #1) by Richelle Mead | The Poppy War (The Poppy War #1) by R.F. Kuang | Ninth House (Alex Stern #1) by Leigh Bardugo | A Deadly Education (The Scholomance #1) by Naomi Novik | The Magicians (The Magicians #1) by Lev Grossman | The Demon King (Seven Realms #1) by Cinda Williams Chima | Nevernight (Nevernight #1) by Jay Kristoff | The Atlas Six (The Atlas #1) by Olivie Blake

  1. Magic schools… what a great twist to the topic! And Ninth House was fantastic!
These books featured memorable (if not exactly good) teachers and schools.

    1. Thanks! I indeed LOVED Ninth House so much.

      1. And not that long to wait for the sequel, 10th Jan?

        1. Indeed, I’m so excited for that one!

  2. The only book that really takes part in a school setting in the seven realms is book 2. 🙂

I need to put Atlas Six on my list clearly

    1. You’re right, I should have added that in some sort of disclaimer for the Seven Realms series.
Atlas Six is still on my TBR, but it sounds amazing.

  3. Deadly Education and Magicians both look promising to me.

    1. They’re both on my TBR, but sound so promising indeed!

  4. Magical schools means fantasy and that’s a genre I rarely read. Many years ago I meant to read the Vampire Academy series but it never happened.

    1. I totally get that! I’ve been reading less and less fantasy lately, so many of these are still on my TBR – hopefully for when the mood for fantasy is right again 🙂 Vampire Academy is for me also one of those series I’ve been meaning to read for years but still haven’t.

  5. Ooh, yas! I loved Nevernight and I have TPW on my list today too. I sadly didn’t love The Magicians book but I did love the show (lol) and I’m looking forward to reading Novik’s books at some point. Great list!

    1. I loved Nevernight too, though I still need to read TPW. I’m sorry you didn’t like The Magicians book, I also haven’t watched the show yet but maybe I’ll need to start there 🙂

    1. They really are!

  7. Sophie @BewareOfTheReader says:

Well now you convinced me to finally read Nevernight as I didn’t know it had a magical school in it Lindsey.

    1. I hope you’ll love Nevernight, Sophie! It’s definitely a dark kind of assassin school, I loved it! (Though I still need to read books 2 and 3 *oops*)

  8. I haven’t read any of these, but magical schools are such a fun setting!

    1. Magical schools can indeed be such a fun setting!

  9. The Magicians was such a good read. Have you seen the TV show based on it?

    Thanks for stopping by earlier.

    1. I’m glad to hear you enjoyed The Magicians! I haven’t read the books yet, not watched the TV show, but they’re both on my list.

  10. Nevernight !!

    1. Nevernight was so good!

  11. I’ve seen The Ninth House on a few lists today but don’t know much about it. Is it a good one?

    1. Ninth House is one of my favorites so I’d definitely recommend it if you’re in the mood for a dark and gritty fantasy!

  12. I have quite a few of these on my TBR, but I did really enjoy The Vampire Academy series!

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!

    1. Glad to hear you loved Vampire Academy!

  13. Magical schools! How fun! The only one I’ve read on here is The Magicians.

    1. I have to admit I haven’t read the series yet, but I hope to soon!

  14. Of these, I’ve read Ninth House and The Poppy War, I enjoyed Ninth House but found The Poppy War a bit too gruesome. I also tried Nevernight, but ended up DNF’ing it. I’ve watched The Magicians TV show, and I keep meaning to read the books but haven’t got around to it yet.

    1. I loved Ninth House too, but I still need to read The Poppy War. I liked Nevernight, though it did take me a while to get into it and I never continued the series…

      1. If you liked Nevernight, maybe The Poppy War will be more for you than it was for me, I think part of the reason I DNF’ed Nevernight was it being too gross!

  15. I love love love love Vampire Academy and Ninth House!

    1. So excited for Hell Bent!!!

  16. I am not a huge fan of “magical” books, although I do have one on my physical shelf I am hoping to get to soon. I like the direction you went and I can think of a few other bloggers who probably did something similar 😉

    1. Magical schools are definitely very fantasy-specific, but I love that this topic was so wide indeed, lots of fun posts!

  17. A great list. I enjoyed watching The Magicians on Netflix 😂

    Have a great week.

Yep – there are some great books there; I’ve read many of them. But, as usual there are a couple new ones that I’m just going to have to check out because if we both like the ones in common, it’s likely I’ll enjoy the others. Great list!

    1. Thanks! I’m super excited for both sequels (though I still need to read The Atlas Six)

  20. Love this topic! Vampire Academy!! I’m excited but nervous about the show. I hated the movie they made, years ago. lol!

    1. I have to admit I’ve never read the books (I want to though) but I’m still super excited for the show too!

      1. Ohh!! They are good. 🙂

  21. I love magical schools. Ninth House made my list too. And how cool of a combination is school and vampires????

    1. Magical schools are the best!

    1. Haha yes these Top Ten Tuesday post definitely make our TBR’s expand a lot 🙂 Hope you’ll enjoy Carry On if you decide to try it!

  23. Magical schools, that’s an interesting twist on the topic. I would have never thought of that but then, I don’t really read fantasy.

Thanks for visiting my TTT this week.

    1. Magical schools are definitely specific to fantasy, but that’s the fun part of this topic: there are so many ways it can go 🙂

  24. Love your twist on this week’s topic and I love magical schools too. 🙂

    1. Magical schools are always so much fun 🙂

  25. Fun topic! Always fun reading about fictional places and the things authors make up or worlds they create. 🙂 Thanks so much for visiting Finding Wonderland on this week. Apologies it took this long to visit here.
