The 2022 Book-to-Screen Adaptations I’m Looking Forward To

20220405 Adaptations

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Hi everybody, and welcome to a new Top Ten Tuesday! Today is a freebie and I decided to focus on book-to-screen adaptations coming in 2022! I’m always super excited about bookish adaptations – sure they can be a disappointment too, but they also have such amazing potential and I just love the fact that these adaptations can introduce so many more people to some of our favorite stories. So here are some of the bookish adaptations I’m looking forward to this year.

(Note that I just binge-watched the entire second season of Bridgerton in a single weekend, otherwise this would have of course also been included on this list of anticipated releases 🙂 )

Pachinko by Min Jin Lee

Release date: 25 March 2022

Premise: Based on the New York Times bestseller, this sweeping saga chronicles the hopes and dreams of a Korean immigrant family across four generations as they leave their homeland in an indomitable quest to survive and thrive. (IMDB)

Why I’m excited: I haven’t read Pachinko yet, but I’ve only heard great things. Plus, this adaptation features Lee Min Ho, basically the actor that got me into kdramas, and I’m excited to see him in this.

Heartstopper by Alice Oseman

Release date: 22 April 2022

Premise: The story of two British teens, Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring, at an all-boys grammar school. Charlie, a high-strung, openly gay overthinker, and Nick, a cheerful, soft-hearted rugby player, one day are made to sit together in class. Their friendship quickly becomes something more for openly gay Charlie, but he initially does not believe he has a chance with Nick. But love works in surprising ways, and Nick is more interested in Charlie than either of them realized. Heartstopper is about love, friendship, loyalty, and mental illness. It encompasses all the small stories of Nick and Charlie’s lives that together make something larger. (IMDB)

Why I’m excited: Heartstopper is the sweestest, most adorable graphic novel ever and I can’t wait to see it play out on screen. From the teaser it seems like they’re staying really faithful to the source material and I am here for that.

Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

Release date: 15 July 2022

Premise: Kya Clark, otherwise known as the Marsh Girl by the townspeople of Barkley Cove, is mysterious and wild. Abandoned by her family, Where the Crawdads Sing is a coming of age story of a young girl raised by the marshlands of the south in the 50’s. Watching many years past, when the town hotshot is found dead, and inexplicably linked to Kya, the Marsh Girl is the prime suspect in his murder case. (IMDB)

Why I’m excited: I read Where The Crawdads Sing in a single day. IT WAS THAT GOOD. And I hope the movie does it justice. The trailer already looks good though, so I have high hopes.

The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han

Release date: 2022 TBC

Premise: A love triangle between one girl and two brothers. A story about first love, first heartbreak, and the magic of that one perfect summer. (IMDB)

Why I’m excited: if this is half as good as the To All The Boys adaptation, it’ll be smashing.

The School For Good and Evil by Soman Chainani

Release date: 2022 TBC

Premise: Sophie had waited her entire life to be kidnapped by the School Master and taken away to train to be a fairytale hero at The School for Good and Evil. However, Agatha, who is unliked by many for being considered a witch, is not ready to give up her only friend and must stop Sophie from going, this ending up as joining her. As the two get whisked away into the deathly secretive world of Fairytales, they find that their fortunes are reversed, much to Sophie’s dismay. Finding it impossible to escape from the treacherous world, they find that the only way out, is through a fairytale. (IMDB)

Why I’m excited: This just seems like such a FUN and magical adaptation

Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Release date: 2022 TBC

Premise: Following the rise of Daisy Jones and The Six’ rock band through the ’70s LA music scene on their quest for worldwide icon status. (IMDB)

Why I’m excited: This book was a masterpiece and I’m so excited to see it play out on screen. And oh, I hope the soundtrack will be equally amazing.

Shadow and Bone (Season 2) – Based on the Grisha trilogy by Leigh Bardugo

Release date: 2022 TBC

Premise: This fantasy series set in the Grishaverse will continue to follow cunning cartographer and sun-summoner Alina Starkov, Mal, and The Darkling, as well as some new friends such as the one and only Nikolai Lantsov.

Why I’m excited: This is the season that brings us Nikolai Lantsov and adds Wylan to our merry band of Crows!

  1. Fun list. I am looking forward to seeing what they do with Pachinko.

My freebie topic: Books that were a catalyst for future reading on the topic or by the author

    1. Thanks! Pachinko does look so good.

  2. With the castin of Daisy Jones I must admit I am overly excited for that one. Same with season 2 of Shadow & Bone and Heartstopper.

    1. The cast for Daisy Jones does look sublime! And season 2 of Shadow and Bone can’t come soon enough 🙂

      1. Agree we needed season 2 like yesterday 😛

  3. Goodness, I want to watch all these adaptations too! And I am a fellow Kdrama fan — all thanks to Lee Min Ho in Boys Over Flowers. 😀 Nice to e-meet!

    1. Oh hi fellow kdrama and Lee Min Ho fan 🙂 Boys Over Flowers is such a classic indeed! For me it was Lee Min Ho in City Hunter, haha 🙂

  4. Yas to Heartstopper! A tad hesitant as well as I have seen just too many adaptations not work, but I have high hopes given how enthusiastic the writer is. Also excited for The School For Good and Evil, though I would like to read the books before the show. Haha. And I have been thinking of reading the books for years, so lets hope this time I get to them. XD

    1. I understand the hesitation, but hopefully Heartstopper will be amazing! I already like the trailer, so I’m still hopeful. And I’m the same about The School For Good and Evil, I hope this show will push me to finally read the books 🙂

      1. I am crossing all my fingers (and toes), I would really love it if it is perfect. Haha, here is to us both starting that series~

  5. I really hope the Daisy Jones and the Six adaptation doesn’t disappoint, the book is amazing so it might be a tough job to follow.

    1. I’m definitely nervous about the Daisy Jones adaptation too, but the cast already looks amazing, so I’m still hopeful 🙂

      1. Fingers crossed

  6. Sophie @BewareOfTheReader says:

Shadow and Bones, Crawdads and Daisy Jones! Also Vampire Academy!

    1. Oh, I forgot about Vampire Academy, that’s a good one too!

  7. I hope you enjoy all of them! Wow, there are a lot of adaptations coming out.

    My post: https://lydiaschoch.com/top-ten-tuesday-reasons-to-take-a-reading-break/

    1. I was surprised with the amount of adaptations too! Hope they’ll all live up to our expectations 🙂

  8. Ooh, Daisy Jones! I forgot that one was coming out!

    1. It’s been a while since we had any updates, but I hope we’ll get some news and maybe a trailer soon!

  9. I love this topic! I am so bad at watching shows/movies etc. based on books but I’m quite excited for Heartstopper and aah, I’m nervous/excited for Daisy Jones 😂 I hope they do the book justice…

    1. Haha, same, though I’m always super excited about them! Heartstopper and Daisy Jones are two of my faves, so I indeed also hope they’ll live up to our expectations.

  10. Wow! There are some great book to screen adaptations coming out soon! I didn’t know about most of these, but now I’m excited.

    1. There are indeed more than I thought coming out soonish. Hope they’ll live up to our expectations 🙂

  11. I’m so excited for Heartstopper! It is SO cute. I hope it translates well.

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.. Thank you!

    1. I hope so too! Though the trailer already looks great, so I have high hopes 🙂

Shadow and Bone season 2! *

      1. I’m so excited for season 2 too! Nikolai AND the crows all together <3<3

  13. I cannot wait for Daisy Jones and The Six. I hope they do it justice.

    1. Me too, they have some high expectations to meet! But the cast already looks great, so I have hope 🙂

  14. I need to read Where the Crawdads Sing before the movie comes out! It’s on my list. I read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and then watched the movie…the movie strayed too far from the storyline, I was so disappointed. Here’s my post: https://cindysbookcorner.blogspot.com/2022/04/top-ten-tuesday-book-series-i-would.html

    1. I’d definitely recommend Where The Crawdads Sing, it’s a gorgeous book 🙂

  15. Great list and topic! I’m excited about some of these as well. I hope we like them. 🙂

    1. Thanks!

  16. The only ones I have read are Where the Crawdads Sing and Shadow and Bone, but I didn’t really like either so I probably won’t watch them haha. The School For Good and Evil sounds good tho! I will have to check it out!

    1. Haha, indeed, then the adaptations probably won’t be for you either 🙂 But hope you’ll enjoy The School For Good and Evil!

  17. Molly's Book Nook says:

I still need to watch season 1 of Shadow and Bone. Oops. I’ve also never heard of any of the others except Daisy Jones and Crawdads lol

    1. Haha, hope you’ll enjoy season 1 of Shadow and Bone if you decide to try it 🙂

  18. I’m excited for so many of these, especially Where The Crawdads Sing, Daisy Jones, and Season 2 of Shadow and Bone. I also just read that there’s going to be a Netflix adaptation of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and I think that’s the one I’m most excited for.

    1. Oh I didn’t know about an adaptation for The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, that’s so AWESOME!

  19. Marianne Maurer says:

Mmmh, I read “Pachinko” and “The Crawdads” but I’m never sure whether I want to see the adaptation because I’m always (well, mostly) disappointed. For that reason, I don’t really have a book where I’m looking for an adaptation but I’d suggest “The Offing” by Benjamin Myers, that might become a good film

Thanks for visiting my TTT which talks about the weather this week.

    1. Book-to-movie adaptations are definitely tricky!

  20. I’ve never read Heartstopper but from the trailer, the adaptation looks cute, and I think I’ll watch it. I’m so excited for Shadow and Bone Season 2 too (NIKOLAI), but doubt we’ll get it this year since they only started filming a month or so ago!
    My TTT: https://jjbookblog.wordpress.com/2022/04/05/top-ten-tuesday-362/

    1. From the trailer for Heartstopper, it looks like they’re staying pretty authentic to the graphic novel so I have high hopes. Oh, I do hope we’ll still get Shadow and Bone this year – perhaps for Christmas break if they could make it by then 😀 So excited for Nikolai!

      1. Oh that’s good then! That would be really great if they did, keeping my fingers crossed! Me too 🙂

  21. How exciting! I didn’t even know about most of these. I generally avoid book-to-movie adaptations, to be honest, but there are some out there that I really like, so I’m willing to give them a chance. I hope you’re pleased with all of these!

    Happy TTT!

    1. I have mixed feelings too about book-to-movie adaptations, but I do always get excited and hopeful 🙂

  22. Lauren Becker says:

I am curious about Hearstopper. I’ve only read the first two graphic novels so far but it’s a sweet story. 🙂 And I loved Daisy Jones so I’m be excited for that adaptation!

    Lauren @ http://www.shootingstarsmag.net

    1. Heartstopper is such a sweet story indeed! And the trailer does look so good too, so I’m excited! And also super excited for Daisy Jones.
