Top Ten Tuesday

Ten Whimsical Children’s Books That Were Written Before I Was Born (& I’d Still Love To Read and Own)

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Hi everybody, and welcome to a new Top Ten Tuesday!

Today’s topic is ‘Books Written Before I Was Born’ and while I was originally making a list of all the classics I still want to read, I then came across The Princess Bride and immediately changed all my plans. You see, while I’d love to read more of the adult classics, what I REALLY want is to revisit children’s classics. There are a lot of the classic children’s stories out there that I either never read (like The Princess Bride) or that I read ages ago and would love to revisit as an adult (like The Neverending Story or Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland).

All of these books, whether I read them or just know about them, envoke this whimsical sense of nostalgia in me, and I’d love to collect them as an adult and revisit them every so often:

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (1865)

Peter Pan by J.M Barrie (1911)

Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne (1926)

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1943)

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle (1962)

The Princess Bride by William Goldman (1973)

Where The Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein (1974)

Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson (1977)

The Neverending Story by Michael Ende (1979)

The Witches by Roald Dahl (1983)

Tell Me:
Have you read these children’s classics? If so, did you read them as a child, or did you recently revisit them?

  1. I have a copy of Winnie the Pooh but have yet to read it. And I really appreciated the Bridge to Terabithia movie so at some point I’d love to read the book.

    1. Oh, hope you’ll enjoy Winnie the Pooh! I read it as a kid, but would love to re-read as an adult. Bridge to Terabithia is new to me, but I’ve heard so much about the movie so I really want to try it (and the book).

  2. I love winnie the Pooh!!!

    1. Winnie’s the best 🙂

  3. I have read ALMOST all of the books on your list! Of course, The Princess Bride is a favorite as is The Neverending Story. I hope you can stop by:

    1. I heard so much about The Princess Bride book and movie, but I still need to experience both so I need to remedy that 🙂

  11. I loved Alice in Wonderland when I was a kid, and I remember loving Winnie The Pooh as well, but I never read any of the others.

    1. I also remember loving Alice and Winnie, but I don’t remember anything else about those reads, so I’d love to re-read 🙂

      1. Me too, it’s been so long!

  12. I love this list! I’ve actually read most of these, but not recently. I definitely need to revisit my childhood favorites, too 🙂

  13. Oh, how I remember most of these having read them as a child too. Fond memories.

    1. It’s so lovely when we have so many good memories linked to books!

  14. Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, and Winnie the Pooh were on my TTT list as well. I didn’t read Winnie the Pooh until last year.

    1. Oh, I’d love to re-read Winnie the Pooh as an adult! (Though I think it would feel like a new read since I remember almost nothing 🙂 )

I’ve always loved Winnie the Pooh. I read the Witches as a kid, but I want to read Dahl as an adult – and get to some of the ones I didn’t read. I read and LOVED Bridge to Terabithia as a kid. I read A Wrinkle in Time as an adult but really liked it.

    1. Winnie the Pooh and pretty much any Roald Dahl book are stories I’d love to re-read as an adult. I never read Bridge to Terabithia or A Wrinkle in Time as a kid, but it’s never too late, right 🙂

  16. You hit on so many of my favorites! Shel Silverstein is still on my bookshelves and my kids are both adults at this point. 😉

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!

    1. Shel Silverstein is definitely a classic for all ages 🙂

  17. The Witches was one of my childhood favourites! I loved the illustrations in it too, Dahl and Blake pair so well together. I’d also like to reread Bridge to Terabithia, I mainly remember only the movie which kind of haunts me a little hahaha so I really want to refresh my memory of the book!

    1. Roald Dahl was definitely a childhood favorite, and I’d love to re-read his stories as an adult 🙂 I heard the Bridge to Terabithia movie is heartbreaking, so hope the book is a bit less so?

  18. I like what you did with this one! So many great children’s books! I also had Bridge to Terabithia on my list today.

    1. Bridge to Terabithia is definitely one I want to read (though I’ve heard it may wreck me)

      1. It will!

  19. Peter Pan and Alice are two of my favorites and so worth the read in my opinion! I’ve been wanting to read Winnie-the-Pooh as well, and a re-read of The Princess Bride is something I really need to do soon. I’ve also never read The Neverending Story, but would really like to!

    1. So glad you enjoyed all of these! I definitely can’t wait to (re)read them!

  20. The Neverending Story is one of my all-time favorites. I just recently re-watched the movie!

    1. Oh, I want to rewatch the movie too some time soon 🙂

  21. Great list. I think I read most of these when I was child and any I didn’t read then, I read with my son. 🙂

    1. It sounds so fun to be able to (re)discover childhood favorites with your son!

  22. Children’s classics are the best. One of the books I read last year was 100 Best Books For Children, which covers both picture and chapter books new (as of nearly 20 years ago) and old, and it reinvigorated me to seek out the ones I’d missed.

Definitely have not finished that list or yours, but I did really love The Witches as a kid, though I’ve always wondered if Dahl’s work would hold up to rereading as an adult.

I read A Little Prince for the first time in its original French (for class), and unlocking each page of words that way sort of felt like learning to read for the first time all over again.

And Peter Pan is one I read in college (just for fun, on my own), and I was really impressed by it at the time.

    1. OH, that 100 Best Books for Children book does indeed sound like it would be super inspiring 🙂
I agree, would love to (re)read some Dahl now and see what I think as an adult. Oh, A Little Prince in the original French must have been a fun read and experience 🙂
