Top 10 New-to-Me Authors I Read in 2020

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Hi everybody, and welcome to a new Top Ten Tuesday!

Today we’re talking about new-to-me authors that we read for the first time in 2020 and… I’m actually feeling a little proud of myself. Usually I suck at trying new authors, as I tend to get a little stuck reading the same authors over and over again and not regularly trying something new. But in 2020, I actively worked on that AND I also had my quest to try more (new) adult urban fantasy and as a result, I actually tried quite a few new-to-me authors!

I actually have way more than ten (the shock!), but for this post, I’m focusing on my top ten (umm, okay, maybe eleven) new-to-me authors I discovered for the first time in 2020:

Jennifer L. Armentrout

I know this is a hugely popular author, but I only read my first Jennifer L. Armentrout book in 2020. I read From Blood and Ash early 2020 and though I had some issues, the story and characters stayed on my mind, which is a sign of a captivating read. And then I read the sequel, A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire, and became OBSESSED.

Aiden Thomas

Cemetery Boys was one of my most anticipated releases of 2020 and I’m happy to say it not only lived up to my expectations, but exceeded them! Can’t wait to read more Aiden Thomas!

Kacen Callender

Felix Ever After was another highly anticipated read which definitely lived up to its expectations, so I’m eager to discover more books by Kacen Callender!

Alexis Hall

Boyfriend Material was on of my favorite reads of 2020 and it turns out that Alexis Hall has a big backlist of queer romance books that I still need to discover!

TJ Klune

This man right here wrote MY FAVORITE BOOK OF 2020, The House in the Cerulean Sea! And he has a huge backlist that I can still discover, though I’m a bit intimidated by how many there are, and also I don’t want to take my outrageous Cerulean-expectations with me to accidentally ruin other TJ Klune books for me, so yeah, I’M NERVOUS!

Jeaniene Frost

Uh, hi, I only discovered this author in 2020 (thanks to a rec from Sophie at Beware of the Reader), but I loved her so much that I pretty much binged SIX books of her Night Huntress series in a few months and I have no regrets.

Emily Skrutskie

Though I haven’t read any other Emily Skrutskie books (yet), I fell so in love with Bonds of Brass (which is basically a gay Star Wars with friends/enemies-to-lovers) that I can’t wait for the sequel to come out this year!

Emily Henry

I was a little late to the Beach Read train, but once I read it, I was HOOKED. And so looking forward to the next Emily Henry release this year.

Hailey Edwards

One of the first authors I tried on my “(new) adult urban fantasy quest” was Hailey Edwards and I loved her Beginners Guide to Necromancy series so much I immediately binged all 6 books in the series.

Mhairi McFarlane

I read two Mhairi McFarlane books in 2020: Don’t You Forget About Me and If I Never Met You and I loved them both. Both were romances that featured broken characters with some deep issues to overcome. Both were amazing reads. But If I Never Met You had fake dating, so naturally that one has my preference because I’m obvious like that.

Tate James

My very first reverse harem story I read belongs to Tate James and to my shock I didn’t hate it at all, immediately binged the entire Royal Trials series and am actually trying more reverse harem stories because of it!

  1. I see several here that look good. And that I’ve seen good reviews for. Armentrout is so popular. Nice list 🙂

    1. Yes, I can’t believe I never tried an Armentrout book before 2020!

  2. I haven’t read any of these authors even though some are very popular. I’m glad you were able to enjoy some new-to-you authors 🙂 I hope you can stop by:

    1. Thank you for stopping by!

  3. I read The House in the Cerulean Sea earlier this month and adored it and now I want to read everything else TJ Klune has written. Like you, though, I’m a bit worried I might expect too much from his other work!

    1. Exactly, I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one who’s worried about this 🙂 Especially because The House in the Cerulean Sea was a very unique kind of read, so I really don’t want to compare his other books to it…

  4. I still need to read Emily Henry!

    1. Hope you’ll enjoy Beach Read when you decide to pick it up!

  7. I’ve read several of these as well, I liked Klune’s book but I found Beach Read very underwhelming. Happy reading! https://readwithstefani.com/popular-books-i-did-not-finish/

    1. Glad to hear you liked Klune’s book! Beach Read definitely seemed like a hit or miss kind of book.

  8. So many people have been raving about The House on The Cerulean Sea, I’ll have to check it out sometime.

  9. Boyfriend Material was one of my favorite books from last year, too! And while I’ve not read that particular Hailey Edwards book, I’ve read a couple others of hers and loved them.

    1. Hope you’ll enjoy any you decide to try out!

  11. I’m quite sad I didn’t love Beach Read in the way everyone else does, but I would give Emily’s next book a chance. Sometimes one book doesn’t work for a reader, but another by the same author does. Plus, her summer 2021 release sounds fun. 🙂

    1. Exactly, I hope the next Emily Henry book is more of a hit for you 🙂

  12. Henry was new to me last year as well. That was a good book. I just finished Klune’s book this year, so that one will have to go on my list for next year.

    1. Oh, hope you enjoyed the Klune book 🙂

  13. Emily Henry was one of my new 2020 reads as well! 🙂

    1. Loved Beach Read and so looking forward to her next release 🙂

  15. I read my first TJ Klune book in 2020 as well. It was The Extraordinaires and it was such a fun read. I’m looking forward to reading The House in the Cerulean Sea this year.

    1. Haha, we’re opposites then because I’m looking forward to trying The Extraordinaries this year 🙂 Hope you’ll enjoy The House in the Cerulean Sea as well!

  16. I’ve heard so many good things about Beach Read. I really, really need to get around to it.

    1. I loved Beach Read, so hope you’ll enjoy it too if you decide to pick it up!
