When The Struggle Is Real… The Nine Times I Had A Book Hangover In The Last Year {Top Ten Tuesday}

20200218 The Nine Times I Had A Book Hangover

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Hi everybody, and welcome to a new Top Ten Tuesday!

Today’s all about book hangovers. So first of all, what’s a book hangover? (she asks as if we don’t all suffer from this affliction on a monthly basis)

I’m going with the below definition for this post, namely a book hangover is the inability to start a new book because you’re still living in the last book’s world.

Book Hangover

So while sometimes book hangovers can last weeks or even months, a small book hangover is still a book hangover. And boy, do I have a lot of small book hangovers. I often struggle with starting a new book because I JUST DON’T WANT TO LEAVE MY LAST READ’S WORLD JUST YET. And when I say often, I mean about 9 times a year, because I checked all my book hangovers of the past year and hey, I have nine examples for you!

Druid Vices and a Vodka by Annette Marie Don't You Forget About Me by Mhairi McFarlane Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

Druid Vices and a Vodka by Annette Marie

Look, I’m sure this is no surprise to anyone, but it’s a fact that every single one of The Guild Codex books has given me a book hangover in the past years because I love this world and these characters so much. I could have added all Annette Marie 2019 releases  here but let’s stick to just the latest one 🙂

Don’t You Forget About Me by Mhairi McFarlane

This is a surprising book to have given me a book hangover because I went into it expecting a simple rom-com and wanted to DNF for a little bit when it turned out it was so much more than just a rom-com. But then I ended up so attached to Georgina’s story and her life and I just wanted her with me for a bit longer.

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

Ugh this book, I love it so much and I’m still not over it. The fact that I would rather have this sequel sooner than the King of Scars sequel with my favorite Nikolai SAYS IT ALL OKAY?

The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary

The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black

Sure, this was such a satisfying finale and everything was concluded so nicely, but still… these books just felt waaaay too short and I needed more. I still need more Cardan and Jude. Thank you very much.

A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer

This was definitely a ‘damn I thought this was a standalone and now it’s not and I’m attached and have to wait FOREVER for the sequel’-type of hangover.

The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary

Another book I almost DNF’ed (due to audiobook narrator issues) but then didn’t and ended up falling in love with. These characters own my heart.

Dear Aaron by Mariana Zapata Red White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Dear Aaron by Mariana Zapata

I think it’s a rule that I grow extra attached to characters if there’s a pen pal romance involved. Also, I kind of related to Ruby a lot. Also, Aaron was just such a solidly NICE character and I was rooting for these two so much that I felt like I didn’t have enough of them. Luckily, I could read From Lukov With Love afterwards in which they cameo, so that helped.

Red White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

This was definitely a case of ‘I will just reread everything from the beginning because no other book will ever compare’-type hangover. And then I reread again a few months later. So this was one of those hangovers that lasted.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Oh Evelyn, you are the best character to have ever been written. I tried to cure my book hangover with Daisy Jones and the Six, which helped a bit but still couldn’t compare to Evelyn.

Tell Me:
what’s the last book that gave you a book hangover?

    1. Glad to hear you loved them too Sophie! 🙂

  2. Aww! I just read a review for “Don’t You Forget About Me” on IG, and she said the same: that this one is SO much more. Also, sometime I must read “The Flateshare.” It sounds so fun. 🙂

    1. That’s such a nice coincidence, glad to hear I’m not the only one who feels this way about Don’t You Forget About Me 🙂 And I definitely recommend The Flatshare!!

  3. The Annette Marie and Holly Black series both look great to me. And I want to read more TJR.

This is an awesome list. 🙂

    1. Hope you’ll love all of them when you get to them! 🙂

  4. So many people love Evelyn Hugo, but it just wasn’t for me. I’m not even sure what it was about it, but we just didn’t click. I’m excited to read Daisy Jones this year and see if I like that one better. The Flatshare is on my tbr. It sounds so fun!

    1. That’s okay, sometimes we indeed just don’t click with a book – hope you’ll enjoy Daisy Jones better! And The Flatshare 🙂

  5. I’ve seen The Flatshare on a few lists this week 🙂 And Evelyn Hugo totally made my list!! I still think about her as a character all the time.

    1. The Flatshare was definitely worth all the hype 🙂 And Evelyn for sure is one of the most intriguing characters out there.

  6. Great list! I loved The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo too, and I really need to cross Ninth House and Red, White & Royal Blue off my TBR. I need to try some of Annette Marie’s work this year – this series in particular sounds like so much fun – and considering this is the second list I’ve seen The Flatshare on this week clearly need to check it out.

    1. Glad to hear you loved Evelyn Hugo as well! I hope you’ll enjoy all of the books from this list you decide to pick up 🙂

  7. I’m glad you liked Ninth House so much! I still need to read that one.

    My TTT .

    1. Exactly! I already want to reread AGAIN 🙂

  10. Ooo! Dear Aaron! That one totally left me in a hangover, too. It was so good! It was my first book by that author, so at least I could go binge on some of her other books.

    1. Ah I’m so happy that you read and loved Dear Aaron as well! It was my first Mariana Zapata too, and indeed luckily I still have lots of her books to read now 🙂

  11. I just got Red, White & Royal Blue from the library and I hope I love it as much as everyone else seems to!

    1. I hope you’ll love it too! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts 🙂

  12. Oh yes. I agree Lindsey, The Flatshare was something special, it really leaves an impact! I tend to avoid overly hyped books, but so glad I finally read it. In this case, the buzz surrounding its release was definitely warranted. I am looking forward to reading O’Leary’s new title The Switch, but I do feel for her as The Flatshare seems like such a tough performance to follow – fingers crossed.

    1. So happy to hear you loved The Flatshare! I’m so looking forward to The Switch as well, but you’re right that it’ll be tough to live up to The Flatshare 🙂

  13. This is such a great list. Evelyn Hugo was definitely a book hangover read for me as well.

    1. I think Evelyn Hugo is one of those books (and characters) that just has that effect on a lot of people 🙂
