Calendar Girls – February 2020 – Meet Cute: Favorite Romantic Comedy

Calendar Girls

The Calendar Girls is a monthly blog event that was created by Melanie at MNBernard Books, and Flavia at Flavia the Bibliophile, and is now hosted by Flavia at Flavia the Bibliophile, and Dani at Mousai Books. It was inspired by the 1961 classic song by Neil Sedaka and created to ignite fun bookish discussions among readers and bloggers.

So, just like the song, each month a new theme is chosen (participants will get to vote between two choices), and participating bloggers get to choose their favorite book within the theme, or the book they think best fits the theme, to talk about in a blog post on the first Monday of each month.

For today’s post, the theme and my selection are:

Nemesis (n.) 1) An opponent or rival whom a person cannot best or overcome.
2) A person’s undoing
3) Joshua Templeman

Lucy Hutton has always been certain that the nice girl can get the corner office. She’s charming and accommodating and prides herself on being loved by everyone at Bexley & Gamin. Everyone except for coldly efficient, impeccably attired, physically intimidating Joshua Templeman. And the feeling is mutual.

Trapped in a shared office together 40 (OK, 50 or 60) hours a week, they’ve become entrenched in an addictive, ridiculous never-ending game of one-upmanship. There’s the Staring Game. The Mirror Game. The HR Game. Lucy can’t let Joshua beat her at anything—especially when a huge new promotion goes up for the taking.

If Lucy wins this game, she’ll be Joshua’s boss. If she loses, she’ll resign. So why is she suddenly having steamy dreams about Joshua, and dressing for work like she’s got a hot date? After a perfectly innocent elevator ride ends with an earth-shattering kiss, Lucy starts to wonder whether she’s got Joshua Templeman all wrong.

Maybe Lucy Hutton doesn’t hate Joshua Templeman. And maybe, he doesn’t hate her either. Or maybe this is just another game.

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary Well Met by Jenn DeLuca

This is a book I actually started and finished in one sitting. And then re-read it again. And again. And then I re-read all my favorite scenes. So it’s definitely worth the hype and if you love romance, I can’t recommend this enough. It is funny and adorable and has basically everything I could want in a romance:

  • A super sweet, quirky, funny, dorky main heroine.
  • A hero who acts like an arrogant ass but is actually a shy, awkward, kind and cuddly teddybear.
  • The enemies to lovers trope. I mean, YASS!
  • The witty, snarky banter between Lucy and Josh.
  • The slow burn romance.
  • The crazy chemistry.
  • The office setting.

If you love romance in any way, please read this. I can promise you there will be butterflies, swoons, goosebumps and a lot of smiles. Also, movie adaptation coming soon!!

What’s your favorite romantic comedy book?

  1. I tried one of her other books and wasn’t crazy about it (actually DNFed it) but I do want to try this one at some point!

    1. Oh I totally understand, I was so excited for her second book and was so disappointed because it did not live up to my expectations AT ALL and was nowhere near as good as The Hating Game (which I do recommend 🙂 )
