Welcome to a new Top Ten Tuesday!

Today’s topic is all about book-to-screen adaptations and I particularly want to talk about LGBTQIA+ representation on the screen. Though we still have a looong way to go to get great representation on on our screens and not everybody handles it correctly (looking at you, J.K Rowling, Disney and Marvel), there is also some progress.

Tv shows featuring queer characters are existing more and more. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina stars a great trans character, played by an actual non-binary actor. Some of my favorite LGBTQIA+ books have already received the screen adaptation (Love, Simon) and others are on their way (What If It’s Us, They Both Die At The End).

But there’s still plenty of room for more. So big tv and movie execs, if you happen to be reading this (and why wouldn’t you? haha), I highly recommend all of these stories to be adapted for the screen!

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
by Taylor Jenkins Red

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

I just need more Evelyn Hugo, okay? This powerhouse bombshell, force to be reckoned with, bisexual actress of Cuban heritage has not left my thoughts ever since I listened to the audiobook two months ago. Evelyn’s story would make an EPIC tv series and I NEED to see the story of her and the love of her life (and no, it’s not one of the seven husbands) play out on screen so I can relive it all over again.

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue /
The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy
by Mackenzi Lee

Movie(s) or tv-show, either would be fine for me. Just give me lots of hilarious, sassy Monty and his undying affection for BFF Percy. And then add in lots of powerful ace Felicity and her band of friends and I’ll never ask for anything again.

Autoboyography by Christina Lauren

Autoboyography by Christina Lauren

This book would make such a perfect movie. I would sit on the edge of my seat for this emotional story of a progressive bisexual teen who moves to a strict Mormon town and falls in love with the bishop’s son. I loved this story. I cried. I swooned. I cheered. I yelled and then I cried some more. And then I read it all over again. Please just make me relive this story again in movie format.

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

I’m calling it now: if this book ever gets made into a movie, Baz will become a household name. He’s just too epic to be only known and loved in our bookish community. In case you haven’t heard of Carry On yet, imagine a Harry Potter-esque world in which Harry has to room with Draco. Also, Draco is a vampire. And totally in love with Harry. (I make the comparison for fun, but don’t worry, Carry On is still it’s own awesome story). Plus there’s a sequel coming out soon, so movie people, get on it!

Going Off Script / Queens of Geek / The Brightsiders
by Jen Wilde

Going Off-Script by Jen Wilde Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde The Brightsiders by Jen Wilde

I recently read Going Off Script, a story about a writer room’s intern who bands together with her crush to try and stop her boss from turning a beloved lesbian character straight. This was such a fun look into the portrayal of LGBT characters in the media and I feel like it would be a fun, meta tv-show. I could also totally see this story overlap with Jen Wilde’s other (equally great and equally diverse) novels. The characters already make cameos, so it wouldn’t be a stretch to mash the storyline together some more.

The Love Interest by Cale Dietrich

the-love-interest-by-cale-dietrich

Talking about meta stories, the premise of The Love Interest is so epically meta. The story is about an organisation which trains boys to become love interests: some are the nice-guy-next-door and some the brooding-bad-boy. They are sent to spy on an unsuspecting girl who is destined for great power and aim to get the girl and become a part of her life. Whoever doesn’t get the girl, dies. Intense, right? But what happens when the two love interests fall in love with each other instead?

Let’s Talk About Love by Claire Kann

Let's Talk About Love by Claire Kann

I will cry on and on about this, but we NEED MORE ACE REPRESENTATION in the media! Aces, aros, aromantic aces, demisexuals, and so on. Get them on our screens, and definitely NOT in the awful role of abnormal weirdos, thank you very much. Might I suggest starting with a fun tv-show about Alice, biromantic asexual pop-culture enthusiast, who is crushing on her library coworker?

I Hear The Sunspot by Yuki Fumino

Because we need LGTBQIA+ anime as well, I nominate the absolutely adorable I Hear The Sunspot by Yuki Fumino. This story is about the cheerful Taichi who becomes best friends with Kohei, a boy with a hearing disability. They form a strong bond and soon become more than friends. Though the manga isn’t finished yet (and I have no idea if or when it will be), perhaps an anime could hurry up the process?

Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli

Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli

We have the Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda movie adaptation, so now it’s only fair that my girl Leah gets her turn to shine, right? I need more of Leah, who hasn’t yet come out to her friends about being bisexual and struggles with her crush on Abby, the girl currently dating her other best friend. Bonus points if we get some cute Simon/Blue cameos, because let’s face it: I’ll never get enough of those two and their adorableness.

Radio Silence  by Alice Oseman

Radio Silence by Alice Oseman

Radio Silence would make an amazing tv show, because of all the important messages it tells, but also because it features THE BEST PLATONIC FRIENDSHIP OF ALL TIME. We need this on tv, because we need to see more platonic friendships between a boy and a girl that don’t turn into romance. Plus, the characters would be amazing and I want to see my fave asexual Aled get some hugs and love.

I Was Born For This by Alice Oseman

I Was Born For This by Alice Oseman

Another Alice Oseman, this time separate because I don’t think these two stories would mix well together, but that doesn’t mean this book doesn’t deserve its’ own chance to shine. This story about a famous trans musician, the struggles of fame and hero worship stole my heart and I need it to have the chance to steal many more hearts.

BONUS:

Red White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

I added this book even though I haven’t read it yet and it hasn’t even come out yet, but I’m already in love with it and want it to become a movie. And hey, while making this post, I found out that it will be! So woop woop, get ready for this fun rom-com about the First Son falling for the Prince of Wales!

  1. I love the book A Gentleman’s Guide to Virtue and Vice. It would make a fun mini-series. My twist: Good movies about famous authors

  2. I would love to see Evelyn Hugo on the big screen! I think it could be amazing. I’m loving the choices you made! 🙂

  3. Great list! The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and VIrtue with one of my favorite books, but I’m worried it will easily be ruined when adapted. I would be frightened to know they made an adaptation. I’ve heard so much about Red White and Royal Blue lately and I want to read it soon.

  4. I totally agree about Radio Silence and Queens of Geek- I would LOVE to see movie or show versions of both of those!

  5. I’d love to see The Gentleman’s Guide on the screen. I honestly don’t think we will ever see a Carry On movie as it is too close to Harry Potter for that.

  6. Great list. And the movie guys need to have some of their workers (at least interns) reading Top Ten Tuesday posts. Oh, and the people that decide what books get into Walmart too. Sometimes I question why certain books are there (and how really popular books aren’t).

  7. Totally agree with the need for more LGBTQ+ representation on screen! Great list, I haven’t read most of these but some of these have already been on my radar. 🙂

  8. Great choice for TTT this week! We definitely don’t have enough LGBTQ representation on screen!

  9. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo would make an amazing movie.

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.

  10. I haven’t read Gentleman’s Guide, but it’s on my TBR list for next month and I’m super excited!

  11. Here’s hoping that all of these books are turned into movies or TV shows.

    My TTT.

  12. I’ve been seeing tons of great reviews for Red, White & Royal Blue this month!!

  13. I would love THE GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO VICE AND VIRTUE / THE LADY’S GUIDE TO PETTICOATS AND PIRACY as movies or TV shows <3 Monty would be a gem! Great choices

  14. I’m in the beginning of Red, White, and Royal Blue, but it’s amazing so far and it’s going to be a movie?! YES!!! I’m so excited about that news.

I’d love a Gentleman’s Guide movie, and The Love Interest. Both great books. I own Autoboyography and still need to read that one, so hopefully soon. In general, give me all the LGBT+ rep in movies and TV!

  15. I’d 1000% love to see The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo as a tv show – it would be PERFECT omg. I’m actually really bitter Daisy Jones & the Six is getting its own show while Evelyn is being slept on. The Gentleman’s Guide would be fantastic as a movie, or tv show – I’d love to see the characters come to life. Same about Let’s Talk About Love and Queens of Geek, they’d be so cute and fun. ? Great post idea!
