Calendar Girls – September 2018 – Favorite Book Set In A School

Calendar Girls

The Calendar Girls is a monthly blog event that was created by Melanie at MNBernard Books, and Flavia at Flavia the Bibliophile, and is now hosted by Adrienne at Darque Dreamer Reads, and Katie at Never Not Reading. It was inspired by the 1961 classic song by Neil Sedaka and created to ignite fun bookish discussions among readers and bloggers.

So, just like the song, each month a new theme is chosen (participants will get to vote between two choices), and participating bloggers get to choose their favorite book within the theme, or the book they think best fits the theme, to talk about in a blog post on the first Monday of each month.

Today is my first time participating in this fun blog event and for my first post the theme and my selection are:

Favorite Book Set In A School:

Fangirl by rainbow rowell

From the author of the New York Times bestseller Eleanor & ParkA coming-of-age tale of fan fiction, family and first love.

Cath is a Simon Snow fan.

Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan…

But for Cath, being a fan is her life—and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving. Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to.

Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words… And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories?

And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?

I’ve had lots of possibilities for this (I even just did a post on favorite high school and college romances) and for a while I was thinking to go with old favorite Harry Potter (who doesn’t love Hogwarts?), or Carry On by Rainbow Rowell, but in the end I chose Fangirl.

Why? Because Fangirl is a book that hit really close to my heart, as I really related to Cath and her college experience. It’s such a sweet and relatable book and I loved that the college setting was not just there as a setting, but was actually a big part of the plot. So that’s why this is my winner for favorite book set in a school.

  3. I think Vampire Academy (the whole series) is my favorite that’s set in a school. I can’t really think of anything else at the moment.

  6. Yes! I picked Fangirl for the same reason! I think it was super unique that school was a huge part of the plot and not just something happening in the background.
