Look, I’m Just Never Going To Read These (Probably) — The Last 9 Books I Removed From My TBR {Top Ten Tuesday}

20200512 Last 9 Books I Removed From My TBR

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Hi everybody, and welcome to a new Top Ten Tuesday!

Today’s topic is about the last books we abandoned, aka removed from our TBR. And honestly, I am TERRIBLE at this. At first I thought “fine I’ll just go through my Goodreads TBR and remove some books – I have so many books on there that I added years ago and have no idea what they’re about so this’ll be easy.”

BUT then I read more about the books and I just can’t remove them because who knows – maybe in a few years I’ll still read this or my interest will return. Just abandoning books seems so harsh… I know, I know, this is pointless but still….

After I spent way too many hours pondering these books, I came up with 9 I was ok with removing. Probably. Maybe. Feel free to let me know if you loved one of these books and I should still give them a try!

After You by Jojo Moyes

Kitsune: A Little Mermaid Retelling by Nicolette Andrews

This one is a book I even started and was so excited about (because, kitsunes!), but I got about halfway and STILL wasn’t invested in the story, the characters or the romance and a few months later I still have no interest in picking it back up again so out of my TBR it goes!

Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman

I watched and loved the movie, but after reading some bad reviews about the book from reviewers I trust and after being given an overview of some of the cringe-worthy scenes in the book (apparently it does get a lot cringier than just the peach-scene) I have no interest in reading this any more.

After You by Jojo Mayes

I admit I did like Me Before You, despite the ableist message. But though I once bought the sequel, I have zero interest in reading this sequel anymore.

Wayfarer by Alexandra Bracken

One Of Us Is Lying by Karen McManus

This sounded really intriguing and admittedly does have some mixed reviews, but I did read some things about it being quite misogynistic and about it using mental illness as a ‘vilainous aspect’ and that just doesn’t sit well with me so I’m not going to read it.

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher

I watched the first season and a half and liked it fine at first but also saw it was very problematic. Then, the further I progressed into the story, the more awful I started to feel. So I quit the series and I have no wish to revisit those feelings by reading the book.

Wayfarer by Alexandra Bracken

I remember that I enjoyed Passenger but between reading it and now, I lost any and all interest in the story.

See Me by Nicholas Sparks (or any other Nicholas Sparks)

Look, I used to love anything Nicholas Sparks wrote and I’ll always have fond memories of his stories, but currently I just have no interest in his new stories any more. Also, there was a scandal surrounding him in 2019 where he was being homophobic and that’s just not ok.

Sisterhood Everlasting by Ann Brashares

I loved the Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants so I was really curious to read this novel set in their adult years. But then I read a spoiler and all my interest vanished.

Confess by Colleen Hoover (or any other Colleen Hoover)

I know she is a very hyped author and I’ve admittedly only read one book by Colleen Hoover (Ugly Love), but I disliked that book enough that it turned me off from trying any more of her books. Maybe this is unfair of me and I would like her other books. But there’s not enough time to read books we’re not certain about, is there?

Tell Me:
Have you read any of these books? If yes, did you love them so much that you think I should give them another chance?

Lindsey xoxo

  1. I liked One Of Us Is Lying but it’s not my favorite of her books. And it is hard to remove books! I’ll find myself thinking okay I don’t want to read that one anymore, then I change my mind, and before long I don’t know what to do lol. Sometimes they stay, sometimes they go. 🙂

    1. Yeah One Of Us Is Lying has such mixed reviews, and people commenting on this post also either love or hate it, so I’m still in doubt haha 🙂

  2. I read Thirteen Reasons Why years ago and remember feeling awful after the book finished so I promise you’re not missing out on anything!

    1. Yeah I felt awful after watching the first season of the tv show, so I’ll probably feel the same way or worse from the book.

  3. Great list! I really enjoyed One of Us is Lying, although I know it’s not for everyone, but Call Me By Your Name is one I have zero interest in.

    1. Thanks! Yeah One Of Us Is Lying definitely has some mixed reviews, so I’m still in doubt haha 🙂

  4. One of Us is Lying wasn’t that great, so I don’t think you’re missing anything there. The big twist kind of left a bad taste in my mouth. The second book in the series was way better, luckily. I read 13 Reason Why ages ago and really loved it, but who knows what I would think of it now. The first season of the TV show is all the book covers, the rest of the show is totally new.

    1. I heard other people say the second book of One Of US Is Lying was better as well!
I liked the first season of the 13RW tv show, but I didn’t like how it made me feel afterwards, so I think I’ll just stay away from the book.

  5. I had the same reaction to Thirteen Reasons Why. It’s probably good to cull it IMO.

    1. Yeah, if a story makes us feel awful, it’s not worth it to continue.

  6. Honestly One of Us Is Lying is not worth it, at least in my opinion, very predictable mystery. I loved Thirteen Reasons Why when I read it, but I was 16 and didn’t really recognise some of the more problematic elements of the plot. I also lost interest in Sisterhood Everlasting after seeing the same spoiler!

    1. That Sisterhood Everlasting spoiler kind of ruined the entire series for me a bit – I’ll just pretend I never read it 🙂

  7. I haven’t seen the 13 Reasons Why series but seeing people’s reactions to it has made me not want to read the book anymore. And I’ve never had any interest in Call Me By Your Name because the relationship in it creeps me out a little ?

    1. Yeah 13 Reasons Why has such mixed reviews – I liked the first season of the tv show but I didn’t like how it made me feel so I don’t want to rehash that by reading the book.

  8. Your comments about One of Us Is Lying surprised me. I’m trying to think back and I can’t really remember a mental illness aspect of it. I will need to remind myself. I really loved it, though. Same for the sequel.

As for Ugly Love, people seem to love or hate that one. I loved it, but I also didn’t mind the subject matter. As for Confess. That book was really cool. It featured real life anonymous confessions and real artwork in it. I also enjoyed the storyline. I’m thinking you might want to start with one like Slammed. It’s more YA than NA. I do think you should give her another chance, though. All of her books are so different.

    1. I think I remember someone or some people ranting about the mental illness aspect of One Of Us Is Lying, but I could be wrong of course since I haven’t read it myself. It’s a tough one, because it seems to be a story people either love or hate and has so many mixed review. Maybe I should still pick it up and see for myself.
Thanks for the Colleen Hoover feedback! It’s nice to know all her books are so different and that maybe I can still love her other books even if I didn’t like Ugly Love. I’ll give her another chance!

  9. I thought Me Before You ended perfectly, and I have no interest in reading either of the sequels!

    1. Exactly! That story was told, no need for a sequel.

  10. I totally understand. That is not my type of literarure, either. I should go through my TBR pile and remove some books.

    My TTT.

    1. Thanks! Removing books can be difficult but worth it 🙂

  11. If it makes you feel better I am not going to read any of those either ??

    1. Haha that definitely makes me feel better to know I’m not the only one! 🙂

  12. I read Call Me By Your Name years ago, before the movie, and liked it, but it sounds like you would be better off sticking with the movie (which I also love). I did really like One of Us Is Lying though!

    1. I LOVED the Call Me By Your Name movie, which is my main reason for doubting whether or not I want to read the book – but maybe it’s best I just stick to loving the movie 🙂 One Of Us Is Lying is a difficult one, because it has such mixed reviews, people either love it or hate it…

  13. I enjoyed sisterhood everlasting but it is very sad. I probably wouldn’t like 13 reasons why now that I am an adult. At the time, in hs I enjoyed it. One of Us is Lying was an average read.

    1. Thanks! Glad to hear you enjoyed Sisterhood Everlasting despite the sadness. I think the sadness is the main reason I’m not gonna read it – not ready for that haha 🙂
