Top Ten Tuesday

Hi, I’m Lindsey And I’m Scared Of Books — Books I’m Avoiding Because They Intimidate Me {Top Ten Tuesday}

191001 Books I'm Avoiding

Hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

Hi everybody, and welcome to a new Top Ten Tuesday!

So today was supposed to be about book titles with numbers in them. But I’m changing topic and going with another topic, namely books on my TBR I’m avoiding reading. Why? Because A) I wasn’t feeling the numbers thing and B) I’m having some trouble getting my posts ready in time lately and this post was supposed to be up a few weeks ago and I almost finished it but didn’t get it up on time so voila I can use it now instead!

Which means, today’s all about books on our TBR I’m avoiding reading, and boy do I have some books for you! All of these are highly popular, highly loved books that are basically MUST READS. And yet, I just can’t bring myself to start them. Because they intimidate the life out of me. So please tell me to woman up and just get to these already!

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

I actually did woman up and got this behemoth of a book on audio. But then I ran into some audio problems… I listen on my phone speakers in my car and I can’t understand a word the narrator says. Out of the car it’s no problem, but since I do 90% of my listening in the car, and this is a 24-hour book, it’s an issue to me. So I need to read this in physical copy instead, but then the sheer size of it is so unavoidable and intimidating.

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

Honestly, I’m just avoiding this one because I know it’ll make me sob so hard and I dislike sobbing, okay? So I’m waiting for the right mood, but when will I be in the mood to sob my heart out?

The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

The hype. The hype is real and it’s intimidating!

Written in Red by Anne Bishop Red Sister by Mark Lawrence The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

Written in Red by Anne Bishop

This series has been raved about by many trusted book blogger friends AND YET I have the first book in this series on my shelf for THREE YEARS ALREADY! I know I’ll love it, but every time I want to start it, something inside me just says… maybe another time. SO ENOUGH!!!

Red Sister by Mark Lawrence

Again, I know I’ll love this. I mean, assassin nuns! But the hype is so big so what if I don’t love it?

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

I want to read this so badly because so many people love it, but something about the blurb also makes me think that maybe it’ll be too magical realism-y for me and I don’t know if I’ll be able to get into it. The only solution is to try, right?

Air Awakens by Elise Kova The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo

Air Awakens by Elise Kova

This sounds like such a fun fantasy series, and the covers are gorgeous, but also there are so many books already and I am intimidated like whoa. Even though I have book one on my kindle for ages already.

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

It’s like the classic adult fantasy everybody always says is a must read. So naturally, I’m scared of it. But at least I can tell myself I just don’t read it until the final book is out (excuses, excuses)

King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo

I ACTUALLY STARTED THIS A FEW WEEKS AGO AND MY INTIMIDATION STILL HOLDS SO BADLY THAT I CAN ONLY READ A FEW PAGES AT A TIME! I don’t want my baby Nikolai, my most favorite character ever, to be reduced in any way. I don’t want this book to hurt me. But it also hurts me that I can’t seem to read this book I’ve been dreaming about for ages…

Tell Me:
Do you get intimidated by books?
Any book on this list that you think I should definitely just get to?

  1. All of these are on my TBR too lol The only one I’ve read is A Monster Calls and I def sobbed and HARD. I probably wouldn’t read it again because it broke my heart too much. It was very well done, but man it was so hard.

  2. I hope you’ll give «The Bear and the Nightingale» a try soon! It’s amazing <3 I need to read the final book in the trilogy… I've been putting it off since the beginning of this year.

    And I feel the same about «Red Sister», I KNOW I'll love it, but…

  3. Great list! You’re not alone – I really want to read The Priory of the Orange Tree but it’s such a beast I still haven’t been able to reach for it. I really enjoyed King of Scars so I’d recommend pushing through it; the banter is so much fun, but I think it also helps that my favourite character from the Grisha trilogy is Zoya and she’s a POV character in KoS so I suppose I was always going to enjoy it.

The Poppy War, The Bear and the Nightingale and Written in Red are all on my TBR too, I don’t know why I haven’t just picked them up yet, and The Name of the Wind is a tricky one. For years I told myself I’d pick up a copy when the series was finished, then I came across a copy in a charity shop for £2 and literally JUST as I was about to start it I came across some stuff about how Rothfuss writes women that have made me so uninspired to read it. It’s a bummer.

I hope you manage to get to all of these soon, though, and that you enjoy them!

  4. Ha I am telling myself that with The name of the wind too. A Monster Calls, The Poppy War, Written in Red, The Bear and the Nightingale and Red Sister are all such great books though!

  5. A Monster Calls definitely is a tearjerker for sure.

  6. Love your chosen topic for today! I absolutely get intimidated by tons of books but I actually really loved The Name of the Wind and The Bear and the Nightingale. I also finished Priory last month and oof, what a journey that was! Definitely intimidated me for ages, even while reading it ? Great TTT!

I’m curious about The Bear and the Nightingale as well. Here is my Top Ten Tuesday.

  8. I definitely get intimidated by books, especially ones by my favourite authors because I always worry that I won’t enjoy their next book! I was nervous about King of Scars, too, but I ended up loving it. Can’t wait to see you review when you finally finish it!

  9. I definitely get intimidated by hype!

  10. The longer the book, the more intimidated I am. I do have A Monster Calls and need to read that asap.
