Calendar Girls

Calendar Girls – August 2019 – Book Lover’s Day: Favorite Book You’ve Read This Year!

Calendar Girls

The Calendar Girls is a monthly blog event that was created by Melanie at MNBernard Books, and Flavia at Flavia the Bibliophile, and is now hosted by Adrienne at Darque Dreamer Reads, and Katie at Never Not Reading. It was inspired by the 1961 classic song by Neil Sedaka and created to ignite fun bookish discussions among readers and bloggers.

So, just like the song, each month a new theme is chosen (participants will get to vote between two choices), and participating bloggers get to choose their favorite book within the theme, or the book they think best fits the theme, to talk about in a blog post on the first Monday of each month.

For today’s post, the theme and my selection are:

Book Lover’s Day:

The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary Circe by Madeline Miller The Wicked King by Holly Black

Can you tell this was an extremely difficult topic from the awesomeness of the runner-ups? But ultimately, only one could win and that honor goes to….

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn HUgo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?

Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.

Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the ’80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.

Written with Reid’s signature talent for creating “complex, likable characters” (Real Simple), this is a mesmerizing journey through the splendor of old Hollywood into the harsh realities of the present day as two women struggle with what it means—and what it costs—to face the truth.

THE HYPE IS REAL! I fell in love with Evelyn’s story so much and I can only recommend this book to every single person I know.

I listened to this on audiobook on the commute to work and back, and I got so entranced by it that I looked forward to going to work and didn’t mind getting delayed by traffic. I LOVED this book. Evelyn Hugo was such an interesting character and her story felt so real to me that I was even tempted to look up her movies (sadly, they’re not real). I loved the romance in the story (interestingly, not with any of her seven husbands), I loved the friendships, and I loved the depiction of fame and how it affected our heroine Evelyn, a bisexual woman of Cuban heritage. I’d recommend this to anyone. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn is worth ALL THE HYPE.

  1. Ahhh this is so difficult! Fortunately I’ve read a lot of great books so far this year, which makes choosing just one really hard. But I think I’m going to go with The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion. It’s the one that I think about the most, that has lingered in my mind the longest. Great post!
