Monthly Wrap Up

June 2018: The Month of Geeky Cinderellas, Boys In Love & SO MUCH MUSIC {Monthly Wrap Up}

June 2018

Hi everybody, and welcome to my June wrap up!

June was a divided month for me. During the first half of the month I read a lot and I LOVED every book I read so much I even read one of them twice. During the second half of the month my reading kind of stopped (other than a few comics), but I watched some great tv and movies and listened to a lot of music. You can also click here now to avail music classes. So yeah, divided but overall pretty great. Here’s what I’ve been up to:

What I Read

Geekerella by Ashley Poston Autoboyography by Christina Lauren I Was Born For This by Alice Oseman

Geekerella by Ashley Poston

This was just the right amount of fluff for me. I loved this geeky Cinderella retelling so much. I loved the focus on fandom, I loved the friendship and I LOVED the kind of penpal thing that our Cinderella and Prince Charming have going on. As I’m a sucker for penpal romances, fairytale retellings and fandom stories, this sweet little story hit all the right spots.

Autoboyography by Christina Lauren

This book. This book. OMG, this book!Ā I loved this book. And this is kind of funny, because I didnā€™t think I would at first. Because honestly, I didnā€™t want to read about strict religion and anti-LGBTQIA+ views. I was looking for something happy and fluffy. But all the reviews I read were so positive and talking about how this book made them cry and feel all the emotions and I couldnā€™t resist. I love me some happy and fluffy, but Iā€™m a sucker for emotions. And boy, did this book bring all the emotions.Ā I was on such a high while reading this. It was a book I could not put down.Ā I was so invested in this story I started sneaking in extra reading time whenever I could because I was filled with this need to find out what would happen in Tanner and Sebastianā€™s story.Ā I finished it and was so overwhelmed with emotions I just could not imagine moving on to another story. So I just went back to page 1 and started reading again.Ā To me, thatā€™sĀ a definite sign of a 5-star book, so thatā€™s exactly what Iā€™m rating it.

I Was Born For This by Alice Oseman

There are a few authors out there where I just know I will love their books, if I’d only get to them. Alice Oseman was one of those authors. I heard so many good things about Radio Silence and it seems obvious I’d love it, but unfortunately I still haven’t gotten to it yet. I’ve also been highly anticipating I Was Born For This, even though part of me figured I’d keep procrastinating on her latest release as well. But when I saw the ebook on Amazon for a discounted price, I saw it as a sign to buy and read it right away. So that’s exactly what I did. And it was so great to discover that my intuition had been spot-on because I adored this book. The fandom aspect was handled so well, the characters were THE BEST, the diversity was amazing and the focus on friendship owned my heart.

Fence #5 by C.S. Pacat and Johanna The Mad Fence #6 by C.S. Pacat and Johanna The Mad Fence #7 by C.S. Pacat and Johanna The Mad

Fence Comic #5, #6 and #7 by C.S. PAcat and Johanna the Mad

I love these comics, though I’m always mad when I finish them in 5 minutes and have to wait a whole month for more. At least this time I waited a few months so I had 3 issues and 15 minutes of reading pleasure. I should have waited until more or even ALL issues were released but I didn’t and now I’m too in love to wait years to read them all. Waiting 3 months for my 15 minutes, I can still do.

What I listened to

My playlist this month was all over the place again, as evidenced by my faves below:

SOME OF MY FAVES THIS MONTH:

BLACKPINK – DDU-DU DDU-DU

I’ve been waiting for these girls’ comeback for what feels like forever (kpop fans are quite spoiled with all these regular comebacks, aren’t we?), and it’s finally here! Though the song title had me a little stumped at first, I am absolutely loving it. I am playing this song and watching the video on repeat and I think I may lowkey have a crush on all four of these girls <3

The Rose – Baby

Aww man, I’ve heard about this band from other people before, but I only really checked them out and oh my god they are amazing. Woosung’s voice gives me shivers and their songs are just hauntingly beautiful. I am so looking for more k-rock soon!

Panic! at the Disco – Hey Look Ma, I Made It

PRAY FOR THE WICKED IS FINALLY HERE AND I THINK IT MAY BE MY FAVORITE ALBUM OF THE YEAR!

All Time Low – Everything Is Fine

This song feels so nostalgic and it is such a jam. I can’t stop singing along.

The Mean Girls Musical

Yes, I got addicted to a new musical. The Mean Girls Musical soundtrack is so cheesy and I love it so much. Favorites right now are Apex Predator, Rather Be Me and Revenge Party. So fetch!

What I Watched

TV

While You Were Sleeping

While You were Sleeping

I was in dire need of a good new kdrama and in the end I chose While You Were Sleeping and damn did I choose right, because I LOVED this drama and it is the main reason why I hardly got any reading in in the last two weeks of the month but I don’t really mind because IT. IS. THAT. GOOD. The story is about a woman who has dreams about the future and one day she meets two people who start having the same kind of dreams. One of them is a prosecutor and so they work together to solve crimes and save eachother and of course fall in love in the process. If you haven’t watched it yet please do because it is glorious.

Thirteen Reasons Why

Thirteen Reasons Why Season 2

I know there are some very mixed opinions on this show and I can definitely understand both sides. I did enjoy season one and I appreciated the messages it sent, even though I agree it’s a tough show to watch with some graphic scenes that can be extremely triggering. I was feeling mixed about season 2, because I felt like the story was already told, but I still wanted to watch more anyway. I am watching this REALLY slowly (I’m only at episode 7 or something) because honestly, it really is a tough show to watch. Every episode affects me and I need to space it out with some fluff. I heard the final episode is especially graphic and terrible and I’m a little hesitant to continue watching, but at the same time I’m captivated by these characters and I want to know how their story will end. Did anyone already watch the entire season? Would you recommend to keep watching or just quit now?

MOVIES

Love, Simon Tomb Raider

Love, Simon

FINALLY! OMG, one of my favorite books and most anticipated movie adaptations is finally here in Belgium and I have already seen it twice because I loved it so. Just like the book, the movie brought a smile to my face. It was sooo cute and fun and I loved the cast so much. I only have one little issue with the adaptation and that is the ending. Highlight to see spoilers: Though I appreciate the cheesy rom-com vibe the Ferris Wheel scene had and kudos to an LGBT movie finally having that cheesy rom-com grand gesture scene, I didn’t think this kind of gesture fit into the story and actually preferred the more private scene of the book. I felt like movie Simon kind of pushed movie Blue, who was even more hesitant to come out than book Blue, to meet him at the Ferris Wheel, IN FRONT OF HALF THEIR SCHOOL, instead of just in private. It just did not feel like something Simon would do. But it did lead to an epic scene.Ā

Tomb Raider

I liked this new Tomb Raider. It was a fun movie and had some great scenes to remind me of the video games. I also liked Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft. So it was a good movie, but not that special either. Just an entertaining way to spend two hours.

Life update

Things that made me sad this month:

  • My mom’s hospital stay. My mother had a health scare and I had to take her to the hospital where she had to stay for a few days. Thankfully she got better quickly with the right treatment and is already back home and recovered, but it was a stressy and scary few days.
  • Being so behind on blogging. I know it’s not that important considering other major events, but I can’t help the guilt I feel when I’ve been so bad at replying to comments or bloghopping.

Things that made me happy this month:

  • We got a kitchen! Well, we don’t have a kitchen yet, but we had it drawn and chosen the materials we want and signed the order so we will have our kitchen in a few months. I got tears in my eyes when we saw the 3d drawing, which is so weird but oh well šŸ™‚
  • Sushi date with my friends!

THINGS I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT MONTH:

  • Watching Ed Sheeran live FINALLY <3
  • All the fluffy contemporary summer reads
  • Plans to see friends
  • Plans to go to a zoo called Pairi Daiza, where they have a bat tower where you can walk around amongs bats! Did you know I love bats? I think they have a bad rep but are actually adorable. I went a few years ago and loved it, and I can’t wait to go back.

  1. Okay I have never heard of Pairi Daiza but I am going to google it after I post this comment haha. Sorry to hear about your mom’s health scare. But glad that she is already feeling better.

    1. Haha yeah it’s a nice zoo, it’s a little far away for us, but for the bats I don’t mind šŸ™‚
Thanks so much! I’m so happy she’s feeling better.

  2. Glad your mom is doing better! That’s so exciting about the new kitchen!

    1. Thanks so much! Yeah it totally is šŸ™‚

  3. Sorry about your mom, hopefully there won’t be another health scare <3 The song name Ddu-Du Ddu-Du had me confused at first hahaha. I was skeptical going in but I ended up really liking the song. YES THE ROSE!!! OMG!!! YESSSSS THEY'RE SO GOOD!!!! I got a bit crazy there for a second but they're seriously so amazing I can't. I really gotta listen to the new Panic! album, I haven't sat down and listened to their music in like over a year lol. While You Were Sleeping is a kdrama I keep telling myself to watch but I still haven't started it yet erghhhh ~ one day! I actually saw Tomb Raider last night – it was definitely entertaining to watch. I think they did good with the casting as Lara Croft. OMG YOU'RE SEEING ED?? LIKE. IN PERSON?? lnsofuwgwoghowgnuoer have fun!!!!

    1. Thanks so much!
Haha yeah, at first I thought “what kind of a title is that?” but now I love it and sing along to it constantly so it shows we can’t let a title warp our opinion šŸ™‚
OMG I totally understand your feelings about The Rose! They are sooo good and I love discovering them now one song at a time.
I’d definitely recommend While You Were Sleeping! It has the romance, it has the mystery and the humor. I still have 2-3 episodes to go so I can’t speak for the ending yet, but up until now it’s been great šŸ™‚
Yeah Tomb Raider was fun! I read some complaints about Alicia Vikander, people thinking she wasn’t fit to play Lara Croft, but I loved her.
AHH YES, I actually saw Ed just yesterday AND LOVED IT. I’ve been wanting to see him live for years and now I finally got the chance and wow! He’s amazing live <3
Hope you'll have an amazing July!

  4. Iā€™m glad you read some good books! Congrats on the kitchen. Iā€™m glad you mom is okay. Iā€™m constantly behind on replying to comments, so I live with perpetual guilt. I hope you have a good July!

    1. Thanks so much!
Haha yeah I think the perpetual guilt is something all bloggers feel but it’s hard to stop feeling it anyway šŸ™‚
Hope you’ll have an amazing month too!

  5. Pray For The Wicked is AMAZING. Loving the songs so so so so much!! šŸ˜€

    1. It is really amazing! Panic! at the Disco just stays great šŸ™‚

  6. Love, Simon definitely brought a smile to my face as well! I adore that movie. AND YES to Blackpink’s comeback. I’ve been really spoiled as a K-Pop fan because they have new music coming out so regularly. It made Blackpink’s music seem really rare in comparison (even though 1 album a year is kind of normal for Western artists). But I really loved the song.

So glad to see The Rose on your list too! I saw them when they came to Brussels in February and they’re honestly so good. I have to admit that I’ve completely fallen in love with DAY6’s comeback in June. Shoot Me is honestly so good, so if you’re looking for more K-rock, check it out! šŸ˜‰

    1. Love, Simon was adorable! It’ll definitely be one of those movies I’ll rewatch regularly šŸ™‚
Yes, we k-pop fans are definitely a little spoiled, but I love it so šŸ™‚
Ah, I’m loving The Rose! Wish I had known about them when they came to Brussels, but hopefully they’ll come back some day.
I just discovered Day 6 and Shoot Me a few days ago, and you’re right, they are great! Looking forward to checking out more of their songs.

  7. I’m so glad you enjoyed Geekerella. I keep seeing that one but never actually hit Go on it. I’m not sure why. Probably the contemporary thing. But I REALLY WILL TRY more contemporary. I promise! Especially Simon Vs.

I really enjoyed the new Tomb Raider but I’ll probably always be loyal to Angelina on this one since I watched that years back and loved it.

So sorry to hear about your mom. I’m glad she’s better and I can understand that being super stressful. Yikes.

A kitchen!!! That’s exciting news! SO awesome. I loved designing my kitchen too. And sushi dates are super dates with anyone. šŸ˜€

Happy July and can’t wait to catch up a bit more with you this month. I’m not as far behind as I was with blogging… So that should mean decent things???

    1. Well, Geekerella is a contemporary about fans of a sci-fi series, so if you like sci-fi maybe the leap to contemporary isn’t too big? Either way, I do hope you’ll love it (and Simon) when you pick them up šŸ™‚
I don’t remember much about the original Tomb Raider with Angelina, but I do know I loved it!
Thanks so much, Di! I hope you’ll have an amazing July too!
