10 Music-Related Facts About Me {Top Ten Tuesday}

Hosted by The Broke & The Bookish

Today’s Top Ten Tuesday was an audio freebie, meaning it could be anything related to audio. You can also look into the site of the online academy the Music Matters to view vocal training and get music lessons. I tried to make it relate to books, but the truth is I don’t listen to audiobooks (though I really should).  So then I tried to make a top 10 of bands or songs. But that proved rather impossible as well…

So why not give you a little bit of everything and give you 10 music-related facts about me? Because other than books, I also really, REALLY love talking about music!

1. I don’t have a musical bone in my body

I love music. So, so much. But I have to stick to listening to it because I can’t make music to save my life. I had a few classes to learn music notes in highschool and even a whole year of it when I tried to study to become a school teacher. I SUCKED. I can’t read notes, I can’t sing and I can’t play even the simplest of instruments. Needless to say, I totally failed that class. I also stopped that study and switched to marketing. I’m not saying it’s the only reason. But I’m also not saying it had nothing to with it.

Anyway, lesson learned: keep my singing to the car and the shower.

2. My musical tastes are all over the place

I can’t stick to one favorite genre. I appreciate so many. One day will be rock day. The next will be super poppy. The next I’ll listen to only Disney soundtracks. Some days I go back to the 90’s. Some days I only listen to the Hamilton soundtrack… I think it’s because I grew up with a dad who is into hard rock and a mom who is into pop and ballads. Best of both worlds! It also means I don’t have any guilty pleasure music. If I love a song, I love it and I have no shame!

But I still tend to gravitate mostly to rock. Even if I love listening to everything, most of my all-time favorites end up being some kind of rock. That includes hard rock, punk, pop punk, hardcore, emo, power pop, gothic metal, indie rock – whatever. If it includes a guitar that is bought from cyfairmusicandarts.com/voice-lessons-houston-cypress, I’m usually in.

4. I have a bass clef/music note tattoo on my wrist

When I was in college, I was going through a bit of a rough patch. My social anxiety was peaking, I felt lonely and I was down most of the time. It is in that period that I turned to music A LOT. I discovered so many bands that are still my favorite to this day. I started going to live shows and discovering the beauty of that. In a way, music is what got me through that period. So in honor of that, I got the tattoo on my wrist – to remind me that I’m never really alone and when I’m feeling really down and out, I can always rely on music.

5. I just got out of ‘The Great Music Slump of 2010-2015’

Sometimes I feel like my music taste is still stuck in the mid 2000’s and I will be one of those super annoying, bitter people who think there is no great music anymore – and the music from their generation was the best. It’s just that I LOVED so many bands back then and I haven’t discovered any new good bands in the last few years. Going to this Homepage one can learn about learning music from professionals.

BUT this year I’ve been actively scouring the internet for new bands and have been asking around for recommendations. So that way I (re)discovered some old and new bands and a whole new world has been opening up for me. These bands are making me feel excited about music again and officially got me out of that slump!

6. This song is being played every.single.day for the last 3 months

“Scream until there’s nothing left
So sick of playing, I don’t want to anymore
The thought of you’s no fucking fun
You want a martyr I’ll be one
Because enough’s enough, we’re done

You told me think about it, well I did
Now I don’t wanna feel a thing anymore
I’m tired of begging for the things that I want
I’m over sleeping like a dog on the floor

Imagine living like a king someday
A single night without a ghost in the walls”

7. I am a live show junkie

I love going to live shows. It sometimes feels like an addiction, like it’s been too long since my last live show and I am CRAVING a new one.

Some of my favorite concert experiences to date:

The one with the first time shivers

  • Underoath (2006): Seeing this band live during Taste of Chaos was the first time I ever got ‘the live show shivers’. When in the middle of one of their songs the band stopped playing and singing and the entire crowd started singing the lyrics. It was the first time I ever saw something like that and felt like I was home in a crowded venue.

The one with the London and the friends

  • Linkin Park (2010): I’ve been a fan of these guys since I was 14-15 years old, but for some reason they never seemed to come to Belgium. So my friends and I booked a weekend in London when they were playing the O2 Arena and IT. WAS. AMAZING. I got to see my favorite band, with my favorite people and got to discover London for the first time.

The one with the nostalgia

  • Backstreet Boys (2014): (Hah, from Linkin Park to BSB – that’s how I roll). When I was 10-13 years old I was a major Backstreet Boys fan. To this day I still know all their major hits by heart. And a few years ago they did a reunion show in Belgium and I went with my two best friends from kindergarten and we just sang along to every single song. It was blessedly nostalgic and amazing. No shame!

The one with the miracle

  • Fall Out Boy (2015): I was standing near the back of the concert hall because I wanted a better view (it was a small hall, so the view was still perfect). Halfway through the set, the guys leave the podium (except for Andy) and all of a sudden reappear right behind where I was standing to do a few accoustic songs. I’ve never been so close to any band, especially one I love so much as Fall Out Boy, so this whole experience felt a bit surreal.

8. I prefer concerts over festivals

I love both, but if I can choose, I prefer a concert. The atmosphere is just so much better. Every single person there is there because they LOVE the exact same band you do. Everybody there knows all the lyrics and everybody there is just as excited as you are and that provides such a unique and comforting environment. It makes me feel like home.

While festivals are cool because you can discover so many bands in one whole day, while eating all the food (also important), the atmosphere feels slightly less welcoming to me. The few bands I’ve been lucky enough to see both at a festival and in concert, I always prefered in concert.

9. The first dance song at my wedding was by Ed Sheeran

When I first got the album ‘X’ by Ed Sheeran I listened to it non-stop. As soon as I heard the song ‘Thinking Out Loud’, I thought to myself  “If I ever get married, this would be the perfect first dance song”. And about 1,5 years later, it was.

Also, Ed Sheeran is currently number one one my ‘hope to see live one day’ wishlist. <3

10. I made a playlist of my all-time favorites on Spotify.

It has 185 songs on it, each and every one special to me and though it’s a crazy, chaotic list, I feel like it’s the best representation of me there is. If my life and soul had a playlist, this would be it:

How about you? What’s one music-related fact about you? And what’s one song you would recommend to me (no matter what genre)?

  1. Great topic and I have to say I’m glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t really do audiobooks. I keep meaning to give them a try but just never seem to get around to it.

    1. Oh I’m definitely also glad I’m not the only one not listening to audiobooks 🙂 I always want to try them but I honestly don’t know when. I’m not in my car that much so it would take me ages to get through one audiobook. And I feel like if I would listen while working I would not get anything done because I would stop to focus on the audiobook all the time 😉

  2. Oh, I love this list. Thanks a lot for sharing. Linkin Park & Fall Out Boy are some of my absolute favorites, and I’m dying to see both of them live (so a bit jealous over here ;)). Since you already seems to listen to Muse, I’m pretty sure this doesn’t count as a recommendation, but my favorite song atm is Mercy. 😀

    1. Oh great that we have some favorites in common 🙂 I do hope you’ll get to see both FOB and Linking Park live someday – they were both amazing! And Mercy is really good, I love the Drones album!

  3. What a fun post with the topic!!! I love concerts so much. I don’t go nearly to enough. I also think I have a pretty varied musical taste but maybe not who knows lol.

    1. Thanks! I know, it’s been almost a year since my last concert and I am hoping to go to one soon though 🙂 Well maybe my musical taste is not that varied either, I like to think it is but then there are some genres I don’t listen to that much, so maybe not that much 😉

  4. Same here- I love music but I don’t think I’m very musically talented. Tried playing an instrument in school and hated it. So yeah, I just listen. 🙂 I’m a pretty eclectic listener too, I gravitate mostly to rock as well but I also like ambient or “new age” music too. Just depends on mood. And live shows are the best! I remember my first concert in high school, it was a rock show and I was basically like I want to go to all the shows now lol.

    1. Glad to know I’m not the only one who’s not super musically talented 😉 sometimes I still wish I could play an instrument but mostly I just enjoy listening. And yes, I remember feeling like that at my first show as well! Like, why didn’t I do this sooner and when is the next one? 🙂

  5. Ha! I saw BSB in concert in…2009, I think. I LOVED them as a tween, but never got to see them live. It was a lot of fun. I love concerts, but I haven’t been to one in 4ish years. I’m craving one soon. My husband keeps me current with music. If it were left up to me I’d probably listen to Metallica, Tool and 90’s grunge all the time lol. Great list, Lindsey!

    1. Glad you enjoyed BSB! I was a bit surprised myself at how many songs I still knew every single lyrics to 🙂 it was so much fun! Hah, I know the feeling, if I don’t push myself to listen to something new once in a while I would keep on listening to the same bands and songs over and over again. 😉

  6. Ahhhh! We have super similar musical tastes. I always feel like everyone else either likes rock OR pop, and I just love both so much! For my first concert I got to see Hinder (back when they were just the opening opening act!), Chevelle, and Three Days Grace. It was awesome! I never got to see BSB, but I did see their opening acts at a mall concert when I was like 12. Kaci Brown and The Click Five, both of whose albums I still have but who never had more than one or two hits.
    My TTT!
    Happy listening! 🙂

    1. Yes, there is no reason it should be either/or, it can totally be both 🙂 Glad you also love both! I loved Three Days Grace! I know the other two by name, but not really any songs – I’ll have to check them out! Oh, mall concerts sounds like so much fun! We don’t really have those here in Belgium, but they sound like a good idea so I don’t know why not 🙂

  7. I can’t sing worth a lick, but that never stops me from belting out some of my favorite songs from time to time! 😀 Great Top Ten! My Top Ten Tuesday!

    1. Oh yes, I definitely still do my singing as well, even if I am terrible at it 😉

  8. I so agree with musical tastes all over the place. I listen to everything, pretty much. Right now, it’s Hamilton every day haha
YOU LOVE SLEEPING WITH SIRENS, PTV, AND HAMILTON?! Where have you been all my life?!! OMG! This is so amazing! King For a Day is one of the best collabs I’ve ever heard (and the music video is brilliant)! You have Scene One as your fave! I love that acoustic version much more than the hardcore one.
I also love All the Small Things, Move Along, Bring Me to Life, The Great Escape (that album was awesome), Misery Business, Face Down, Don’t, Complicated, Jar of Hearts, Neon Lights, Since U Been Gone, Bye Bye Bye, I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing, It’s My Life, If You Can’t Hang, Do It Now Remember It Later, and King For a Day!!! My boyfriend loves Yellowcard and I listened to one of their recent songs and I liked it a lot.
    I’m saving your playlist!

    1. AHHH, that’s so great that we have so many favorites in common! Sleeping With Sirens, PTV and Hamilton are pretty much on my playlist every.single.day! I love them all so much and I’m kicking myself for only discovering them all a few months ago. King For A Day is the song that introduced me to both PTV and Sleeping With Sirens and to this day it is still my favorite. I love the combination of Vic and Kellin’s voices and I wish they would do more collabs 🙂 Ah and that video, I think I have pretty much memorized every single second by now because I’ve watched it so many times.
And Hamilton I procrastinated listening to for soo long. And then I wgave it a try and at first I though ‘meh, not bad but not sure it’s for me’. But then I pressed repeat. And listened again. And pressed repeat again. And now I’m obsessed and it’s my mission in life to learn all the lyrics by heart. And oh boy, there are a lot of lyrics so I still have a lot of work to 😉

  9. Relate to number 5 so much, I just realized the newest song on my fall playlist is from 2013, I found so many great bands I loved in college then just never seemed to progress past that in terms of new bands lol.

    1. I totally understand 🙂 I always laugh when people only play songs from a certain timeperiod, but when I look at my own playlist I actually do the same 😉

  10. Ah, I love this so much!! We have so much in common when it comes to music ? Seeing Underoath in 2006 must have been SO AMAZING! And seeing Fall Out Boy too! They’re on my Bands I Want to See Live bucketlist because I haven’t had the chance yet. So many of your favourites are my favourites. I totally get what you mean about concerts and festivals too. I love the vibe of festivals, but concerts are so powerful because you’re all there for the same reason. I love your tattoo! I have a music note on my left wrist. And haha, I also don’t have a musical bone in my body unless you count that I can play some nursery rhymes on the recorder ?

    1. Thank you! 🙂 I hope you’ll get to see both Underoath and Fall Out Boy in concert still, they were both pretty amazing! I know, I still like festivals (we have one every year that’s only a 30-minute drive from my home so I love it) but it’s still not the same as a concert. Plus they’re crazy expensive so I usually only go when I already know and love at least 3-4 of the bands. This year was a bummer because Sleeping With Sirens came and I REALLY wanted to see them, but they were the only band on the line-up I liked and they only had a super short set so I couldn’t bring myself to pay this crazy expensive fee… Ah well, here’s hoping they will still come back another time for a headlining concert 🙂 That’s so cool you also have a music note tattoo! I must admit, even my recorder skills are absolutely horrible… 😉

  11. My musical tastes are also all over the place too. It comes in “seasons”. I’ll be listening to classical music for a few months then switch to rock then 40s pop. It’s fun to discover awesome music in all genres.
That story about Fallout Boy is so cool. It must have been freaking awesome to see them so close without expecting it.

    1. Oh, that’s a nice way to think of it as coming in seasons 🙂 It is indeed nice to be able to dicover and enjoy music in all different genres. The Fall Out Boy thing was indeed amazing! I was so surprised and happy and also stressing, like “What do I do? Do I take my phone and record everything so I never forget this? Or do I just enjoy this to the fullest without worrying about filming? Is this really happening? Aah!” 🙂

  12. Great topic! I hope you get the chance to see Ed Sheeran live one day, I saw him a couple of years ago and it was amazing!

    1. Thanks! That’s so cool that you got to see him live! I definitely hope he’ll come back to Belgium someday soon 🙂

  13. Oh Linkin Park, Creed, Sum 41, Blink 182, Panic at the Disco (heart eyes) … Clearly I love your playlist. <3

    1. Great! Glad we have so many favorites in common 🙂
