Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Books I Enjoyed Recently That Weren’t My Typical Genre/Type of Book

As hosted by The Broke & The Bookish

Top Ten TuesdayI’m a creature of habit. I will almost always eat the same thing at a restaurant (pasta!) and I will almost always pick the same color when shopping for clothes (black!). The same goes for books. I will almost always pick a fantasy / dystopian / sci-fi with a dash of romance. But I’m trying really hard to spice it up and try some new types of books (I’m reading quite a bit of contemporary lately). Still, this list was pretty hard to come up with so I think I still have some work to do and new genres to try.

Anyway, here are a few books I read recently that are not my typical go-to kind of book (in no particular order):

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me by Mindy Kaling

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me by Mindy Kaling

I love Mindy Kaling and I wanted to start reading more non-fiction, so this was a good (and hilarious) start. I also have her new book ‘Why Not Me?’ waiting to be read.

All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven

All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven

Honestly I am a bit of a wuss and I usually try to stay away from a book if I just know it’s going to hurt me and I’m going to cry. Which was definitely the case for this book. But it was so worth it because it has become one of my favorites.

Me Before You

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

Same story as All The Bright Places. I knew this was going to be a tearjerker but I just could not stay away. And again, it was worth it and has become one of my favorites. I’m also super excited for the movie coming out in June!

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

One of the few historical fiction books I’ve read (I should really get on that). And again a book which I knew in advance was going to hurt (I mean, it takes place during WWII and is narrated by Death, that’s kind of a big give-away) but it was such a great and unforgetable book.

Everything Everything

Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

A contemporary about a girl who is allergic to the world and the boy who falls in love with her. This was also not exactly screaming ‘happy, magical or fluffy’ but I still wanted to pick it up. And again I loved it.

If I Stay by Gayle Forman

If I Stay by Gayle Forman

This is a heartbreaking book about a girl who is in a car accident with her family. She ends up in a coma and has to decide if she want to give up or wake up and go on living, even if it is without her parents and little brother. Another tearjerker that scared me, but I still read it and loved it.

Quiet by Susan Cain

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that can’t stop Talking by Susan Cain

Another non-fiction book, this time about introverts and extroverts, their prejudices and their strengths. As an introvert myself, I loved this book. Susan Cain makes everything sound so clear and fun and it’s been a real help. If you’re interested, go watch her TED talk, it’s amazing and gives a good idea about the book as well.

Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion

Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion

I hated zombies. Until this book. Though I have to be honest, the movie also had a lot to do with why I picked this book up. But still, I loved this book and have started some more zombie books since. Such as…

Enclave by Ann Aguirre

Enclave by Ann Aguirre

Another zombie-type book. It sounded very scary and gory, and it kind of was, but I still love this entire series and I love Deuce as the main kick-ass heroine.

Attachments by Rainbow Rowell

Attachments by Rainbow Rowell

A contemporary set in the nineties about a guy who works for a company where he has to monitor everyone’s e-mails. And then he falls in love with a woman based only on her e-mails. Ok, maybe this is stretching it a bit because this does sound like something I would read. But hey, it’s set in the nineties so it counts as historical fiction, right?

What are some books you recently picked up that weren’t your usual type of book? And what books or type of books would you recommend me to try?

  1. Attachments is one I’ve been thinking about too, it looks fun. :)And I like her writing. I’ve been reading more contemporary as well which is a fairly new genre for me.

Attachments is a really fun novel, I would definitely recommend it 🙂 Rainbow Rowell is indeed a great writer, I would also like to pick up Landline by her!

  2. Quiet has been on my TBR for a very long time ! I don’t make a habit of reading non-fiction but I thought I could definitely make an exception for a book about introversion (because that theme is right up my alley). I really have to get myself to read it. Warm Bodies is so good ! I honestly can’t remember why I picked it up because zombies are definitely not something that I read about often, but it was such a nice change.

I agree comppletely! Quiet was one of the first non-fiction books I picked up and I really appreciated it! And yes, Warm Bodies is a nice read even if you don’t like zombies 🙂

  3. I love Warm Bodies! It’s one of my all-time favourites now. Like you, I hadn’t read any zombie books before it, but I’ve read a couple since. I only read it because of the movie too. I can’t wait to see what Isaac Marion does with the sequel either. The Book Thief is another great and unique book too.

I almost forget there is going to be a sequel to Warm Bodies! I can’t wait to read it 🙂

  4. Me Before you is one I was so adamant I would not like when people recommended it me. it turned out to be one of my favorite books of 2015 so joke’s on me. Have you seen the trailer? that had me almost in tears so I’m thinking I’ll be an emotional wreck during the movie.

    1. Lindsey Habets says:

Yes, I rewatched the trailer already about a hundred times, I’m addicted 🙂 And you’re right, the trailer already makes me tear up so I know the movie will definitely make me an emotional wreck.

  5. The Book Thief is one of my favourite books, so glad you enjoyed it!

  9. I loved Everything, Everything. It wasn’t something I would typically read either but I’m glad I did! I’ve also heard a lot of good things about Mindy’s books. I don’t usually read non-fiction but I love Mindy! I’ll definitely have to give them a try 🙂

    1. Everything, Everything was great! And if you like Mindy, I think you’ll like her book too. Maybe it’s worth it to try the audiobook, I haven’t tried it but I think it will be even better if you hear Mindy herself narrating 🙂

  10. I adore Attachments! It’s on My TTT too!
