Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books That Will Become Movies in 2016

As hosted by The Broke & The Bookish

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday will mix two of my favorites: books and movies! 2016 will be a great year for movies in general, but specifically also for book-to-movie adaptations, which seem to be growing in popularity each year. This is a list of my most anticipated book-to-movie adaptations coming out in 2016. (in order of release date):

The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

What it’s about: Earth has been invaded by aliens (known as The Others), who have attacked in four increasingly deadly waves. With the 5th wave on the way, Cassie is one of the few people still alive and she’s desperately trying to save her younger brother, who has been taken by The Others. Watch the trailer.

Starring: Chloë Grace Moretz, Liev Schreiber, Alex Roe, Nick Robinson

Release Date: January 22nd (April 13th for Belgium)

I read this sci-fi novel last year and absolutely loved it. It’s dark and gritty and yet sarcastically funny. I think this could be the next big Hunger Games or Divergent and I don’t understand why this is not being promoted more in Belgium. I mean, come on, why does it need to be released 3 months later in Belgium? I understand a few days, but why 3 months?

The Choice by Nicholas Sparks

The Choice by Nicholas Sparks

What it’s about: Travis Parker is living his best life — hanging out with friends, playing water sports, traveling, and working a good job — but when Gabby Holland moves in next door, everything changes and important choices must be made. Watch the trailer.

Starring: Teresa Palmer, Benjamin Walker, Alexandra Daddario

Release Date: February 5th

Nicholas Sparks is the king of romance novels and book adaptation chick flicks. I think it’s almost every year that one of his books becomes a movie (think about The Notebook, A Walk To Remember, The Lucky One, Safe Haven, and so on) and they are all a must have for any girls’ movie night.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith

What it’s about: It’s Pride and Prejudice, but there are zombies and the Bennetts hunt them.  Watch the trailer.

Starring: Lily James, Lena Headey, Charles Dance, Matt Smith

Release Date: February 5th

This movie sounds insane! Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy as zombie hunters – it’s just so crazy that it must be amazing. I have not yet read the book myself, but I have a feeling I’ll like it better in a movie anyway.

Allegiant by Veronica Roth

Allegiant by Veronica Roth

What it’s about: Allegiant is the third movie in the Divergent series. It continues the story of Tris Prior and what lies beyond the gates of the closed and controlled society she has always known. As is common these days, this final book will be split into two films and the second half will be released in 2017. Watch the trailer.

Starring: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort, Naomi Watts

Release Date: March 18th

I loved the movie Divergent. I hated the movie Insurgent. But I still want to see Allegiant. I am trying to accept the fact that this movie will be nothing like the book: it will only have the same title and characters and everything else will be completely different. With that in mind, maybe I will still enjoy this movie. But still: read the books first! They are much, much better.

Me Before You

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes

What it’s about: Will Traynor used to enjoy life to the fullest, until an accident made him a quadriplegic and took away his desire to live. Lou Clark just lost her job and is forced to take a new job: taking care of Will. This arrangement will eventually change both their lives forever.

Starring: Emilia Clarke, Sam Claflin, Matthew Lewis

Release Date: June 3rd

This is the first book I read in 2016 and I adored it. Lou and Will are these amazing characters and the book does a really good job of making you feel all their emotions to the fullest. Also, how about that cast? It’s every fangirl’s dream to see their fandoms collide – in this case Game of Thrones, The Hunger Games and Harry Potter. Just one tip: bring enough tissues when you go watch this.

The Girl on the TRain by Paula Hawkins

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

What it’s about: The Girl On The Train follows the story of a woman named Rachel, who takes the same train to London every day. Each day during her train ride, she watches the “perfect” couple. But one day, she sees something shocking and becomes involved in what happens next.

Starring: Rebecca Ferguson, Emily Blunt, Justin Theroux

Release Date: October 7th

This book was a phenomenon in 2015 and has been compared to Gone Girl a ton of times. Unfortunately it’s still on my TBR, but I do plan to read it before watching the movie. Unfortunately I accidentally spoiled myself concerning the ending of Gone Girl which kind of took away my need to read the book or see the movie and I hope to remain spoiler-free on this one so I will be able to enjoy it completely.

Inferno by Dan Brown

Inferno by Dan Brown

What it’s about: Robert Langdon is back. After waking up in a hospital room in Florence, Italy, with no memory of what has occurred for the last few days, he suddenly finds himself the target of a manhunt. With the help of Dr. Sienna Brooks and his knowledge of symbology, Langdon will try to escape whilst solving the most intricate riddle he’s ever faced.

Starring: Tom Hanks, Felicity Jones, Ben Foster

Release Date: October 14th (October 12th in Belgium)

It’s a Dan Brown book-to-movie adaptation with Tom Hanks returning as Robert Langdon. Greatness is expected and I can’t wait to watch it!

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness

What it’s about: Conor, a 13 year old boy, finds a monster outside his window. He’s been expecting the monster from his nightmare, the one he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her cancer treatments. But this monster is different. It is ancient and wild and it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor – the truth. Watch the teaser trailer.

Starring: Liam Neeson, Felicity Jones, Sigourney Weaver, Lewis MacDougall

Release Date: October 14th

I have the book but I have not yet read it – mostly because I think you have to be in a certain mood to really enjoy this book. But it has these really gorgeous black and white illustrations that help set a specific atmoshere for this book and from the teaser the movie looks equally atmospheric and gorgeous.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them by J.K. Rowling

What it’s about: The adventures of writer Newt Scamander in New York’s secret community of witches and wizards seventy years before Harry Potter reads his book in school. Watch the teaser trailer.

Starring: Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterson, Ezra Miller

Release Date: November 18th (November 16th in Belgium)

Confession time: I am a self-proclaimed Potter nerd and yet I have not read this book. It’s mostly because I have this thing about book spin-offs or novellas: I just can’t bring myself to buy them because I am convinced they will not satisfy the need for more story. Even if it’s J.K. Rowling and Harry Potter. Anyway, that does not mean I am not super excited about this movie!

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

What it’s about: Teenager Jacob follows clues that take him to a mysterious island, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s School for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores the abandoned bedrooms and hallways, he discovers that its former occupants were far more than peculiar; they possessed incredible powers. And they may still be alive.

Starring: Eva Green, Samuel L. Jackson, Ella Purnell, Judi Dench

Release Date: December 25th

Another series that’s been on my TBR for a while, but I still have some time before the movie comes out. This series has been highly recommended by many book reviewers for being enthralling, magical and spooky. Plus the movie is being directed by Tim Burton. I don’t think this can go wrong!

All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven

Bonus: All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven

What it’s about: When a girl befriends a boy atop a school bell tower, it is unclear who saves whom. But as of that moment the pair form a unique bond filled with life lessons.

Starring: Elle Fanning

Release Date: 2017

OK, this does not technically come out in 2016. But I just can’t wait to start recommending this book to everybody and their dog because I loved it so much. Weeks after reading this, Finch and Violet are still on my mind. I am expecting great things about this movie.

What are some of your most anticipated movies of 2016? (Book adaptation or not)

  1. Hubby & I are looking quite forward to Fantastic Beasts too! My TTT

    1. Lindsey Habets says:

2016 is a nice year for Harry Potter fans, with Fantastic Beasts AND the stage show of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child!

  2. I want to see the 5th Wave movie, it looks good even though I haven’t read the books. Allegiant I’m excited about, although this trend of dividing into two movies is SO aggravating. I want to see it and be done! And the Girl on the Train I’ll go see too- I liked the book but didn’t love it. Emily Blunt is in it though and I think she’ll be good.

    1. Lindsey Habets says:

I agree completely about the trend of dividing into 2 movies! They could just make one slightly longer movie if needed…
